Cannot Get Mail The user name or password fo"imap.gmail.com" is incorrect

I bought my 3Gs yesterday and am trying to set up my email accounts. Neither or Yahoo will accept my settings (AOL works, but I don't use AOL). I have quadruple checked the passwords, reset them, turned wifi on and off, turned push on and off ... nothing works.

Is there a trick to this setup that I'm not aware of?

iPhone 3Gs, iPhone OS 3.0.1

1. go to gMail on your computer.
2. Once in, click Settings (upper right).
3. Click "Forwarding POP and IMAP" tab.
4. Verify IMAP is enabled on your account.

Then outside of these steps

There shouldn't be much more to it.

Thanks, that did it, for gmail.

Does yahoo have a similar setting (that they don't charge $10 a month for?) I didn't have this problem with my blackberry aps ...

The error for Yahoo is imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com (everything else the same)

omg, I think I figured it out. I had the same problem where I couldn't get gmail to be configured on my iphone 3g after I install 3.1 firmware. It was so frustrating. I followed the imap instructions etc nothing worked. I was at a friends house one day on his wifi (because I don't have wifi at home) and decided to do it one more time to see if configuring over wifi will work (thinking it might be some AT&T bandwidth crap) and low and behold it worked. Only after I turned on wifi. If i delete the account and turn off wifi I get the same problem of cannot authenticate. In Short, try to do it through wifi on your iphone! Hope this helps!

Thanks, Bobby. We were able to get gmail going a while ago ... I think Yahoo just doesn't work unless you pay them for pop access 😟

I had this same issue, and I tried going here on my iPhone.

Try it...it just magically started working for me (and I did everything...prayer even).

Just enter your username, not with @gmail.com for incoming mail server...If you write username@gmail.com it fails and gives username password incorrect message..

I figure it out from my gmail account in my Macbook Pro Mail App. If you are using Mail app and if you configured Gmail accuont to your Mac before, you are gonna see that in your imap.gmail.com preps there is no any @gmail.com after your username..

Worked for me... iphone 3GS with 3.1.2 firmware
