Output to Studio Monitors

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to figure out the most affordable and highest quality solution to out put to a pair of studio monitors. I figured I'd either have to use a USB/FireWire audio interface but I was wondering what the quality would be like if I used a cable that went from 1/8 stereo to balanced xlr.

Thanks,

Alex

Thanks for the response,

I never thought of something that obvious! The monitors I have, have both xlr, and TRS, I guess it depends on what amp I use whether it would work or not. Also I've been wondering what the quality would be like if I went straight from my iMac to the speakers (Individually Powered) using a 1/8" stereo to two 1/4" plugs. Would a set up like that work? Or maybey just pick up one of these, http://bit.ly/2GvGgk ?

Thanks for the suggestion.

The audio out on the iMac can handle both headphones and line level. It really doesn't matter what kind of plug you use on the other end of the cable - RCA, TRS or XLR. What matters is the _nature of the input._

Powered speakers normally have their own amp inside, so going 1/8" iMac out --> 2xTRS line-in in should work fine - of course that assumes that your 'powered speakers' are actually that, and not just plain speakers that have 1/4" TRS inputs, expecting a speaker-out feed from an external amp.

The issue with XLR is that XLR inputs are usually intended for mic-level signals, so the line out from the iMac may be too much for your XLR inputs unless there's a trim/gain adjustment on the XLR inputs. Some devices have these trimmers, some don't.
