Outgoing mail server not recognized

Hi there
After a week of having Snow Leopard my outgoing mail address is now suddenly rejected by the server. I have tried to delete my mail box but that doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Ian

Hi Ian,

Quit Mail if it's open.

Try dragging this file com.apple.Mai.plist to the Desktop.

~/Library/Preferences.

Launch Mail and see if your Outgoing Mail Server works. If not...

Open Mail.
Choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
Click Accounts in the Preferences window.
Select (highlight) your account on the left side of the window if you have more than one account.
Click the Account Information pane.
*Ensure that the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" pop-up menu is not set to "None". If it is, select your server from the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" pop-up menu if it appears.*
Test for the issue.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem, I upgraded to 10.6.1 yesterday and ever since I get a problem that mail cannot contact the outgoing mail server and cannot send mail. This is intermittent and more importantly the mails do send, I set one mail 9 times this morning to a customer, as it kept saying that the mail had not gone.

This must be a problem with the 10.6.1 update?

Hi Caroline

Tried both solutions, Still no change. When I tried setting the mailbox up again I also get this message

Mail cannot send your password securely to the server.
I then have to set up manually. I called the service provider and we tried to send a mail from the web page and had no problem. No more help from them as it seems to be a problem on my Mac.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I tried this and now all works perfect see if you can use if not sorry

Copy of my message to Ernie
To all having followed this issue:I have found Edie in the forum and he was able to help me out.

Dear Ernie thank you so much for providing this link which enabled me to get the Apple mail program back to work as I had experienced with Leopard 10.5.I had to make some more phone calls with my provider Yahoo/Xtra to solve a few issue with regard what and which servers to use for outgoing servers .Some confirmation issues of my E-mail addresses as well. I am over the moon and you certainly have shown your skills and knowledge to me.I hope that you are able to report this solution higher up in the Apple organization to help others same as you helped me.Here first the link from which I followed the instructions regarding the change of DNS address thank and thank and thank again. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9973232&#9973232

This is exactly what I did to fix my problem:
To use OpenDNS, follow these steps:
1. Open the Network pane of System Preferences.
2. In the list on the left, select the interface that’s currently providing
your Internet access (usually AirPort or Built-in Ethernet).
3. In the DNS Server field, fill in the following:
208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
4. Click Apply, and then close System Preferences.
5. To verify that the new DNS servers are working, visit any Web site
in your favorite browser.
If DNS delays were causing the sending problem, sending mail should
go much faster now.

Just try but watch the settings as they were so you can always change back.

I looked this up:

Account information

account type POP
Email adress : (your address)
File name : (your name)

Incoming server:pop.prodigy.net.mx

username:(your name)
password:(your password)
outgoing server: (depends what you have configured) see further down.
tick the box use only this server

Under Advanced select advance on top of your menu.

Enable this account: tick this box
Include when auto....etc:click this box
leave copy etc : do not tick box

Now still to configure outgoing server for that use connection doctor.
You find this in the drop down menu just beside left off the help drop down menu.
Click the doctor. The doctor goes scanning and find the incoming server a green indicator is lighted.
I t does not find out going server and a red light appears.
Double click on the message beside the red light
A menu appears for out going server.
In the top square empty all info that is there by clicking - (= the minus sign) under this top square
When empty click + to enter the details for outgoing server.
A light gray double click appears.
do that and fill in your details: smtp.prodigy.net .mx
give a name to this server:that name is the one I mentioned above depends etc

click apply.
Close the window and you will be asked to save if it is not saved already.

Remember my first advise above when you still can not get connected the reason may be that your provider use a dynamic DNS address the changes every tim you log in for this change the DNS address as in my previous advise.
Please let me know if it works for you.Connection Doctor is the only way I could reach quick access to outgoing server.

Alternatively delete all the accounts and just follow the procedure for adding account.
Wait until the server is found take quite some time but you may still have patience after this.
I have spend 3 days to get it all right! and 3 hours phone my provider and 3 hour Apple

I am glad that it works. If you did everything I told you you will have now a STATIC DNS as opposed to a Dynamic.By switching your power off (if you did that) and on again you may have repaired it.
I should have told you to switch the power on and off in the first place!
So es verdad Hoy vamos a ver si sabemos algo mas que ayer.
