Cannot save bcoz of 'Disk error'

Hello people,

Last night I was working on some photoshop work for college and when i tried to save to my computer i got the message ''cannot save file.psd because of disk error''. Luckily i have a 1gig usb stick that i was able to save to instead. I restarted the computer and things were initially ok but soon enough once again i was told i could not save because of disk error. has anybody encountered this problem and if so how do i deal with it?

How much free space is there on the hard drive?

Where were you trying to save the file to --- a folder within your Home folder, a folder within your Documents folder, your Desktop, or where?

Assuming you're running OS X 10.3 or l10.4, if you open Disk Utility and select the hard drive, what does the SMART status at the bottom of the window say?

Try booting from your OS X install disk and open Disk Utility from the Installer menu to run Repair Disk on the hard drive (see a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214" target=_blank>Using Disk Utility and fsck). Take note of any errors it reports and post back with the results.

Hi Tim,

I have had this happen on several computers at the school I work at. A work around I used to get students to do was to change the filename and sometimes that would do the trick. However, that fix doesn't work with Photoshop CS2 anymore. The only way around it is to quit and relaunch Photoshop. I've had this happen on eMacs as well as Quicksilver G4s, all of which had ample free disk space, and all are running versions of 10.3. As well, the error happens when saving to the local HD and the student's home folder on the Mac server.
