What does this error message mean?

In Mail, I click 'get mail' on my Dreamhost account and the wheel spins. Nothing comes, even though e-mail is there on the server - visible in Squirrelmail.

It's not Mail or my internet connection. Other accounts download fine from other servers (non-Dreamhost).

It's not the server. The same mail downloads fine via Snow Leopard on my MacBook, with the exact same account details.

*The error message in Console reads "Mail162 -POP3Connection fetchMessages:totalBytes: failed: Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=54 UserInfo=0xd8d8c10 "The attempt to send data to the server “(null)” failed.""*

Sometimes a few messages come, then stop. One message seems to be blocking it. I delete that on the server and more emails come down, until it happens again, very soon.

So it's the interaction between this computer and your server. I have no firewall. I only use the Junk anti-spam in Mail, same as on the MacBook.

This was the case with Leopard, OS X.5. I thought upgrading to Snow Leopard would stop it but it didn't.

What does the error message mean? Any ideas please? I posted this yesterday on the Apple Dsicussion Forum but no one has responded.

I opened networked utility and did a look up and got the result as follows on mail.cyberium.co.uk:

Do they recommend Port 995 and SSL for POP access?

You might consider removing the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 file, after quitting Mail, and then when you relaunch, all messages still on the server would again download, but you would have freshened file that when working properly prevents duplicate downloads. I will understand if you do want to have new, duplicate downloads, but it might be what is needed.

David,

If indeed you have set the account up as POP, and have ever downloaded any message, then there would have to be such a file -- double-click on your hard drive icon, and in the resulting Finder window click on the icon of a House beside you name -- that is Home. Once in your user directory, click on Library, and then the Mail folder -- the file should be at the root level of that Mail folder.

If not, then open Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information -- what is the Account type shown for this account?

Ernie
