Q: iTunes sync error -50 on iMac, due to new upgrade for iPhoto

iTunes 9.0.1
iTouch 2.2.1

I'm unable to sync my 2nd Gen Touch - recvd error "The iPod cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)"

I read previously that the problem was with syncing photos. I was able to 'uncheck' photo sync and it did work - but wondering if there is a fix for being able to sync photos.

In a previous thread they mentioned that upgrading to iTunes 9.0.1 fixed their problem - however it has NOT fixed mine. I have NOT upgraded my touch to the new 3.0 - is that required?? How can I get my photos to sync again?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I got mine to sync again! In iPhoto you have to remove the songs you have playing in sideshows, etc in the settings. If the song, artist, etc has special characters it won't work to sync. I had one that had a "/" in the song title and another was just shuffling through my itunes library of music. So once I removed any reference to music in my iphoto and then closed and reopened iphoto I was able to sync up again like nothing was ever wrong.

does that apply to any slideshows in iPhoto - or just to those that you wish to sync?

Thanks all for your help, it's sorted...

I discovered a slideshow that referred to some deleted photos; it didn't like that. Getting rid of that slideshow has sorted the problem.

    Thanks again

    MoVista-

What a great find! I'm now smiling again as my Apple products are back to playing nice with each other. Turning off the music in my slideshows was the trick to getting my iPhoto to sync!
    Thank you!

Apparently this is related to the slideshows in iPhoto. I had the problem, too, and resolved it the following way:
    1. Open iPhoto
    2. Select Slideshow, disable music for the slideshow
    3. Repeat step 2 for each slideshow you have in iPhoto
    4. Try syncing the iPod again.

This has worked for me. Got that information from another thread, see

    Hope this helps.

Thanks. Removing the songs for a slide show was all it needed. I had tried lots of other suggestions before this.

I did not have any slideshows in my iPhoto library but there were some photos on my iPhone that had been moved off the computer to save space. I am assuming, due to the following resolution, that the photos that were in the cache but lacked the original were causing the photo sync failure.

First, I set iTunes to NOT sync photos at all. iTunes will prompt that it will remove all your photos. Since they are in my library, no problem.

I then synced my iPhone successfully (obviously a problem with photos then)

After shutting down iTunes and iPhoto, I followed the procedure here:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314 (again, ensuring that I'd shut down both iTunes and iPhoto)

I then reattached my iPhone and set up the photo sync again

Sync again and - voila! "happy mac", er, phone

I was haveing this same iTunes sync error -50 and had tried everythinge else I could find suggested on these forums. Deleted all iTunes software and files, installed new iTunes, deleted iPod Photo cache, reset iPod, reinstall software on iPod.

BUT WHAT FINALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM was deleting a slideshow I had made that had a music file associated with it.

Now, once again, my iPod Touch can sync with all or any of my selected files.

    Thank you MrGuru75

I had the same problem with Aperture and iTunes syncing to my iPhone and deleting the slideshows did not fix it.

Eventually I discovered that if I deleted all unusual characters from the titles/names of all projects/slideshows/faces including slashes (/) and ampersands (&), it then worked fine.

As away of detecting this, I had tried opening ApertureData.xml file in Safari and Safari noted an error in line XXXX. By going to that line (opening same file in textwrangler with line numbers turned on) I found reference to a title containing one of these unusual characters. Changing all the relevant titles in Aperture fixed the problem.

ive been receiving the -50 error message for months, and it all started with updating my ipod touch to 3.1 and itunes to 9.0.3. in fact, it left me having to take my ipod to the apple store to do a restore there, and STILL wont sync. since then, i do not have any photos or videos on my ipod. i also recently purchased a macbook, and i thought this would solve the problem. it hasnt. has anyone any advice? ive read through so many discussions and nothing has worked so far.

I too am having the iTunes -50 sync error, but in my case I have no photos being synced to my iPhone. This only started happening after I decided I wanted to lower the bitrate on my music files. It was working fine before this.

    Any insight into the matter?
