msn messenger no alert sounds anymore!

I use msn messenger on my iMac G5 and always get a sound alert when contacts come online and I receive mails. However, since last night all the sound alerts work still except when someone comes online. I checked the preference settings in MSN and everything looks normal; it should sound when someone comes online.

I already uninstalled messenger, did a system clean with Onyx in case something strange happened while using other programs, restarted the mac and downloaded and installed Messenger again clean, but still that alert sound doesn't work. Anyone knows a solution?

Check MSN customer support website. It's where you should be checking for troubleshooting issues for their product.

On the Apple side, try the following if you have not done so already:
Repair permissions & restart.

Trick/Tip: Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit out of the GarageBand app.

Otherwise, you should go to the vendors website.

Some audio applications may change your computer's audio settings to a sample rate that is too high for other applications to use. These same apps will change the settings in the Audio MIDI Setup app.
By starting up GB & then quitting out of it, the Audio MIDI Setup app settings will revert back to default and the sound should return.

"Can this be the reason of the sound problem and is there a way to get this grayed out slider set to usable?"

Yes & Yes

Some 3rd party audio apps can change the settings in the Audio Midi app. I believe in your case it is not MSN messenger. Chat/audio/video IM apps are not known to do that.
Do you have any 3rd party audio software installed? Most will change the Audio Midi app Format from 44100.0hz to some other number and cause the +"greyed out"+ settings syndrome. It's more than likely why the GB trick did not work.

GB, QT nor VLC are not known to change the audio settings. I know nothing about Logic 8 and Sibelius 5. If they are 3rd party audio apps, then disable and/or uninstall them to see if your audio settings return to normal. If so, then enable/reinstall one at a time to confirm which one changed your settings.

The only way to change back the settings to normal is to find the 3rd party audio app(s) culprit that you have installed and/or enabled.

EDIT: If Logic 8 is part of Apple's audio Pro Applications, you will need to post in one of their forums. The folks there will be able to provide further solutions.
