Time machine gone wonky since Snow leopard ... stalling, huge backups, etc

Ever since I upgraded to snow leopard, Time Machine has freaked out just about every time it tries to do a backup.

1) It will stall part way through the process regularly. The icon at the top will spin and spin like it's doing a backup, but nothing happens. I've seen it do that for a day and a half, all trying to back up the same 1.8 Mb of data. According to the rather useless little widget you're supposed to download, there is usually no error code, and it lists an error 256 and/or error -36.

While this is stalled, any application that I try to use the "save as," "open," "open recent," or any other command that brings up the dialog box to select a file/location gets the spinning beachball of death and also hangs. The only way to fix this is to turn off or unplug the backup drive, which stops Time Machine, and then turn the drive back on/reconnect it.

The stalling/hanging happens at random times, it seems -- sometimes during the first backup after turning the drive off and on, sometimes on the 4th or 5th but it's happening every day. Disk Utility shows no errors with either the internal drive on my computer or the back-up drive.

The disk still has more than 30 gigs of space, to it is not a "your hard drive is full" thing. Even if it was, Time Machine used to delete old backups to make room for new ones, as needed (at least it did in Leopard).

2) There are unbelievably and unnecessarily large backups almost every day. Even when all I've been doing is editing 1 Excel document, backups sometimes exceed 2.5 Gigs, and they usually stall out part way through (with progress stuck at some portion of the size listed).

I almost wonder if it's not trying to back up swap files or virtual memory space being taken up on the hard drive.

Anywho, that's my latest bugs/problems with snow leopard. I'm about to pull a Vista and downgrade back to 10.5, which was a perfectly fine operating system.

Well then, even without using CCC or any other backup program, I suggest the following. Drag all the folders from the root level of your Macintosh HD over to the external drive. Then let's see if that drive is capable of writing large amounts of material without failing. If it doesn't complete the copy process, I would suspect your internal drive is bad. This is an easy enough test to try. And I would reformat the external drive first.

For what it's worth, either the problem was not the drive (which was o.k., according to drive genius, disk warrior, and disk utility), or it's a problem with a brand new drive, too (which is also o.k. with drive genius, disk warrior, and disk utility.

For what it's worth, time machine is not even reading the amount of free space on the drive correctly:

From the rather useless widget:

No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.23 GB requested (including padding), 97.20 GB available

From the finder: 104.34 GB available

I've been following this thread closely in hopes that a solution might surface; I'm having the same problem with my Time Capsule that's less than 1 year old. But to my big surprise a backup went through last night without any hiccups, but today it's been back to it's regular non-backing up state. The last time it crapped out it had been standing on "Calculating Changes (1%)" for about 30 minutes before it failed.

In Console there's a lot of messages about Error (256), Error (-36) and Error (-8062) and error writing to backup log.

Any advice?
- Start all over with Time Machine?
- Wait for 10.6.2 and see if anything has been changed?
- ?

Depending on the wording in those messages, various things, including doing a +*Repair Disk+* on the sparse bundle. Start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.

If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup, what you've done, and the results.

Failed to mention it earlier; I did a Repair Disk on the sparse bundle prior to the backup that succeeded. There where no messages from the Repair Disk operation, which lead me to believe that there's nothing wrong with the disk(?)

I haven't tried the most obvious; A4. Full reset of Time Machine.

I'll try that after posting this and get back with the result, meanwhile here's the messages from Console for the last backup that failed:

It's having all sorts of trouble with Spotlight index on your backups.

The mds process (MetaData server) is used by various system jobs, including Time Machine, but mostly Spotlight. It's also having trouble with it.

I think this refers to the hidden log in each backup folder, in the sparsebundle.

2009-10-08 18:40:07 com.apple.backupd[6156] Error: (-36) SrcErr:NO Copying /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist to /Volumes/Backup of Vienna/Backups.backupdb/Vienna/2009-10-08-102242.inProgress/562266AB-EBC4-42EE- A4E1-CE9813E6F660/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences

Again, can't copy to the sparse bundle.

If it's still doing this after the +*Repair Disk,+* either run it again or double-check the DiskUtility.log in the Console sidebar.

Ordinarily, the Spotlight problems usually can be cured by excluding the TC from Spotlight Indexing via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. If you're doing any anti-virus scanning, exclude it from that, too.

If all else fails, this begins to look like a problem with the disk in the TC. How old is it?

The Time Capsule is little over 1 year old, had to get the receipt to check that out.

Anyway, the problem I had with Time Machine seems to be solved; I plugged in the TC by ethernet cable and after some tinkering, perhaps the most important step was disabling the wireless connection, Time Machine works flawlessly every time. (I've tried three times to make sure and all ends with "Backup completed successfully")

Seems that the problem lies somewhere in my Airport network; either in the Time Capsule, my iMac or the Airport Express that I'm using as base station.

Thanks for your effort, I greatly appreciated it!

OK, I've found another error code.

When the backup stalled (with no error codes in the rather useless widget) and the finder locked up, I force quit the finder using Activity Monitor to try to get the Finder to re-launch -- though I knew it wouldn't. However, upon clicking the finder icon in the dock, I got an error -10810 telling me that the finder couldn't be launched.

Here's everything from the system.log in the console from that backup attempt forward.

Many of these and related ones following. There's a corrupted message (or messages) in your system log, dated Oct 15 at 08:58:32, that's causing the widget to crash.

Scroll up to that date/time to see if you can find it.

You have multiple problems here. How severe any of them are is not clear. Since you seem to have done just about everything else, it's probably time to do a reinstall of OSX, and update back to 10.6.1.
