O.K. , I really need someone who knows there Mac's.

My 1 year old iMac has been freezing and crashing. I have done 2 clean installs and I'm still having problems. Have done all the permissions and disk repairs through the installation disk. Still having problems. Seems to be an input/output error. So I have just gone in on single user mode to run the fsck repair(not sure if that is the correct term) and this is what I keep getting over and over:
On the first pass it said:

** /dev/rdisk Os2
** Root file system
Executing fsck_hfs(version diskdev_cmds-491-1).
** Checking Journaled HSF Plus volume.
** Checking extents overflow file.
** Checking catalogue file.
diskOs2: I/O error.
Invalid node structure
(4, 400)
** The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
/dev/rdiskOs2 (hfs) EXITED WITH SIGNAL 8

On the second pass it said:

** /dev/rdiskOs2
** Root file system
Executing fsck hfs (version diskdev cmds 491-1).
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
** Checking extents overflow file.
** Checking catalogue file.
diskOs2: I/O error.
Invalid node structure
(4, 400)
** Rebuilding catalogue B tree.
diskOs2: I/O error.
diskOs2: I/O error.
Invalid key length
(4, 702)
** The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired

***FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

For the most part it keeps repeating this, there was however something about a node structure being illegal. I looked this up about the b tree and kind of get that one of the node structures has a malformation in the sub nodes. (Forgive me if I'm not making sense.) Anyways, can anyone tell me what is going on. I am scheduled for a new hard drive next week and would like to know why my system is failing or at least understand it a bit better. What do the reports say?? Anyone want to take a stab at it. Also, I am off waranty,no I did not get Apple Care and I live in a small town without a certified Apple repair tech. Please answer as the only way us noob's can learn is by getting answers. Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Thanks for answering my post. I have done 2 erase and installs, and it's still acting up. I had my t.v. connected to the computer when it froze this last time. I have used the proper cables ie:DVI to DVI adapter from Apple. Being that it's an input/output error, could this be the cause? After the installs, it seems to be o.k. for a few days, then it starts acting up. Also, the only outside program loaded onto the system is Transmission. I have upgraded to SL(the problems started before this), but I have the most current Transmission for SL.

O.K. , I really need someone who knows there Mac's.
