Secure link to iTunes store failed

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

Since iTunes 9.0.1, this is all I've been getting. I've downloaded & reinstalled it several times - no luck.

Under help>diagnostics>Network Connectivity Tests, all are verified with one exception: "Secure link to iTunes store failed."

Under help, there are two possible faults listed. I need to clear my DNS Cache by restarting the machine - i've done that 30 or so times since this problem began.

The second possibility: your router is screwed. Hardly likely! I've been using that router successfuly (with & without iTunes) for months.

Some coincidence: i was using iTunes store quite happily as 9.0.1 was being downloaded. Within half an hour - after 9.0.1 was installed - i was locked out. And it's been like that ever since.

Why?

Is there a solution?

Calmly considered... i guess that - new to 9.0.1 - you now need a secure network connection to access the store.

It's all in the error message.

This is a pretty fundamental change to iTunes though... i bet that a big proportion of users have an unsecured wireless network at home. Why did they not bother to tell us? And why don't we have the option of opting out?

That's a job for Saturday then: plug into the router and set up a password.

Same exact problem here.. My ipod nano is new and I'm a new user also. Worked fine when I first downloaded the itunes app but now I experience the same exact problem. Can't access the itunes store. Must be an problem coming from apple, definitely not from my pc. I've tryed all the trouble shooting suggestions also but I'm not technical enough to make detailed changes to my pc so I'll wait and watch the boards to see if apple makes some changes. For now SOL. So danged dissappointing. 😟

Not so sure securing your network is the answer either. I'm not wireless and I checked to see how to make my computor secure. Pretty technical stuff. I wouldn't think apple would put out a new version that would require such a large number of us regular non-techie folk to do backbends. I'm sure they want to continue doing business. I'll bet this will all be fixed in a matter of days. The more we all post here the more likely it will get fixed quicker. Just glad I read these posts and now I can quit scratching my head and doing handstands in front of my pc all afternoon. 🙂

Ditto. Today

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

No problems before 9.0.1, which I DL'd last night. Today my cable/internet provider delivered a new smokin' high-speed internet box today; all else works great but iTunes store.

Re the comments above, however, I am pretty sure our wireless network is secured, as we have passwords, so not certain that's the issue. I will try to call the provider and check.

Also, I shut down iTunes, went to http://www.apple.com/itunes/overview/, selected [Music], picked a column of music and selected View All>. I got the same message above, but this time when I click [OK] another box says

"We could not complete your iTunes Store request.
An unknown error occured (11122).
There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."

That suggests the problem might be at Apple's end. Either way, I'm trusting it's in Apple's incentive to roll out a correction pronto; they could be losing lots of sales.

If you have Norton, try getting help from them to reinstall it and reconfigure it to work with itunes store. Worked for me. I'm guessing when we updated to the new version of itunes, norton no longer recognized it and wouldn't let it through. Norton has good support and can do the work for you remotely.

An hour ago I launched iTunes and got into the Store, no problem. No idea what changed. The I rebooted my PC and got in again.
One possibility was a change in my browser LAN connection settings last night (back to no proxy). But that was instructed by my ISP, Comcast, as a necessary step after they installed a new modem the other day. Now this was not needed for my default browser, Firefox, because the tech must have reset it, but it seems to have been required for IE. When I launched IE, Comcast took me right to a page that instructed me how to make the change back. (It's not hard to find -- Tools > Options >, get to LAN connection settings, set to no proxy or turn off any proxy.) Handy page; I wish I'd saved it as evidence.
Still, this is unlikely the issue with others and not a recommended solution. Anyway iTunes uses one's default browser settings, not necessarily IE, so that would not explain my case.
... Elsewhere in Apple land, my Apple TV refuses to reconnect since the new modem, and I have both Comcast and Apple stymied by it.... But at least now I can presume the Store issue was not related.

I have 3 PCs, 2 Vista, 1 XP and an iPod touch on my home network. None of them have Windows firewall. I can only access the iTunes secure link on the XP machine. The others all fail. I have checked IE/FF settings and I have no proxies. I have enabled SSL, TSL etc. I have security on my router. Please please Apple, tell me what's going wrong here?

I have several machines in the house running XP, Vista and 7, all connect fine except one. My wife and I share that machine, so we have two logins on the physical box. After upgrading to 9.0.1.8, She can connect to the iTunes store, but I can't.

Again, same physical machine two different logins.

I've checked all of the settings and nothing is different from any of the other machines in the house, just this one account on this one machine.

hints?

Mine is doing the same thing with saying it is not connecting to the internet. My interent works fine for everything else so I don't know what the problem is. I tried reinstalling the older version and that did not work. It was working fine two days ago while I was doing the upgrade then as soon as it was done upgrading it stopped working! I really hope they fix this soon, it's driving me crazy!

As a programmer with 30+ years experience it really PO's me when programmers think like programmers and not like their users (E.g. MICROSOFT!!) and add these kinds of requirements without explaining how users should address them. I think that Amazon's music download might be my new home if they don't come up with a fix pronto because I am not screwing up my home network for Apple.

I have been having the same issue since the latest iTunes update. I can connect to the store, but I cannot login, view my account, or authorize/de-authorize computers. After wasting days uninstalling and re-installing iTunes and trying all of the suggestions found in the forums, with no success, I finally identified my router as the source. However, I cannot figure out what setting or settings are causing this. I have tried everything. The only way I can get a secure connection is to bypass my router and connect my computer directly to my modem. Anyone have any ideas as to which settings to adjust?

I don't know the solution to this ongoing problem. However, if you restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, you will be able to access the store, and download podcasts. You would then need to restart in normal mode to transfer new items to your device. To restart in Safe Mode with Networking, continuously press F8 when restarting your computer.

Hey guys, I've been searching for days and finally found the solution (at least, one that works on my system):

http://asserttrue.blogspot.com/2009/09/fix-for-dreaded-itunes-9812-error.html

It's an old obscure windows security patch. It's weird, even though this patch is from 2009, itunes just stopped working for me randomly a few days ago. Ah well, fixed now.
