HELP! Booting up problems... need suggestions, a pat on the back...

I've had no problems with my 7 year old 700 mHz eMac until this morning. I was letting it run and download some updates from Software Update overnight. When I got up this morning, I remembered that I had let it run all night long. It was stuck on the iTunes update, which I had needed to quit before it continued. I did and sent it on its merry way which it began to do with the rest of the updates. At some point in the next half hour, the mouse got moved and the widgets got stuck and frozen as it was still downloading. Frozen, I couldn't force quit anything, so I turned off the power (probably the big mistake right there...). It hasn't been able to re-boot past the gray screen, then the white screen with the apple, since. It sits at that screen and instead of running the little spinning circle like it usually does while booting I get nothing for hours. I tried zapping the PRAM, nothing changes. I cannot go into single user or verbose modes. I re-booted from the Install CD and ran Disk Utility. It verifies that the HD needs to be repaired and that "Keys are out of order..." I hit repair and it says that it is re-building the catalogue B tree and then says that Repairs are completed, but the HD is still unmounted. Is there any way to force it to mount? I'm thinking about picking up a copy of Disk Warrior tomorrow and crossing my fingers. I have LOTS of stuff that I have wanted to backup on an external hard drive that I haven't been able to afford. Any suggestions?

Keys out of order is something Disk Utility can not repair...

As you already guessed......

If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility to repair it.

I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.

Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.

I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.

To be sure, a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, would be invaluable now. Let us know if you need help with that.

Good Luck! DALE
p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

Thanks, Dale. Yes, I'm going to order DW today and give it a shot.

Great!
I've just replaced the eMac after a few years of thinking about it, with a MacBook Pro.

Congrats! You'll like it....mine is great.
I'm having problems getting the eMac to transfer files over via TDM,

That's because the e-macs directory has serious damage. I would not risk migrating till you are sure DiskWarrior has successfully rebuilt the e-mac's directory. Your files are most likely damaged due to the directory issue, and if they do transfer over, will corrupt your brand new system.

Do you have a trouble free backup of the e-mac?

Thanks again, Dale. Yes, ordered DW last night and I hope that will take care of it enough to get files from the drive. I have SOME backed up, but not enough as I was putting off buying an external HD until I could really afford it and this is what I got myself into. However, I've learned my lesson and have a Time Capsule now for backup.
In any case, I already tried target disk mode yesterday before I read this post and the HD is so corrupted that it won't mount as a disk image on the MacBook, so I couldn't get anything off that way even though the eMac still boots in TDM. It DOES show up in Disk Utility, but obviously it can't be repaired from there.
At least I did get to transfer over some stuff from my older ibook. 😟

Alright, DW has been running. It cannot replace the corrupted directory. I get a preview of the work that it has done, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get what is available to me out of the eMac. PLEASE help! I'm lost here. I've tried ethernet and firewire and I don't know how you're supposed to be able to drag anything from the DW preview to anywhere else...

Really? I've run it three times now and its getting slower every time to build a preview. The first time was in the regular rebuild mode and the next two times I tried Opt. "scavenge." The report says:
"DW has successfully built a new directory for the disk named "Macintosh HD." The new directory cannot replace the original directory because of a disk malfunction." and so on... "It is highly recommended that you backup all of your data from the preview disk."
Should I restart and run it again? I'm confused.
And how DO I backup my data if the FW cable is not linking my MacBook with the Preview column in DW?

Sadly, nope. I have backups of my stuff going back to six months or so prior, but not after that. I was waiting to try and afford an external HD. Guess that I feel stupid now.
But back to my question, am I doing something wrong if DW is not showing the MacBook's HD in the Preview if it is connected via a FW with the eMac? Isn't that part of what the preview function is for, to enable you to drag and drop and backup what it can salvage for you? The report says backup now, which is what I want to do.
I'm bummed that the HD is going to have to be replaced, but its beside the point right now. Now I need to rescue what I can. Shouldn't a FW cable work? I know that its a functioning cable.

I've successfully recovered everything. I talked with a bored sounding tech at Alsoft who said flatly, "Boot the MacBook into target disk mode and it'll show up in the preview of Disk Warrior." I can't believe that I didn't think of that before, so it's all good now. I'll be replacing the eMac's drive so I can pass it onto my three year old. It doesn't seem salvageable according to DW's report. Thanks for the help again, Dale. 🙂
