Headphones aren't working?

I've read your post several times, and I'm asking myself the same thing about your post.

"But I thought when I plugged in the headphones the internal speakers would turn off, and the music plays through both."

Both "what"? When you plug in the headphones, the internal speaker should cut off, and the radio should play through the headphones. If that is not happening, you should speak with the dealer from which you bought the Nano.

"I tried another set of earbuds and it would connect to the radio but still told me to insert ear phones to get radio reception, and it still played out both sets of speakers."

This does not make any sense at all. First, you say that the radio plays, and then you say it does not. Regardless, you mentioned "both sets of speakers". What are you referring to?

It sounds like you have a bad connection on the headphone plug of the Nano. It'd probably be best to go back to the store where you got the nano and exchange it for a different one.

I understand exactly what you mean. When inserting any headphones or aux. cords, the internal speaker in the Nano continues to play. When connecting to the radio, the message requesting headphones be inserted to receive a connection is still showing, even though the headphones are inserted and working properly. Listing to the radio is the only time that the headphones, no matter what pair I try, work correctly. I took my original Nano back today, and just now found that the issue is happening with my new one, as well. There seems to be no settings associated with this problem and so I am led to believe this is a soon-to-be known issue with the 5th generation Nanos. Resolution: Take it back, exchange it, and cross your fingers.

So, I went back to my point of sale yesterday to swap the Nano. I got two more and they both had the same issue. The poor employees couldn't figure it out. We even plugged into three of the working floor models, same issue with both of them. All the ones we tried were different colors. The silver Nano was the only color that worked properly and I was told that they will be researching the whole batch to see if all of them are doing the same thing.

Was this at an Apple store?

I had the same problem. You have to push it harder in. It works now for me!

I also had the same problem, when the headphones were plugged in, the music would be played through the both headphones AND speaker. Managed to get it working by being a little more "forceful" when plugging in the headphones, but I'll probably get a replacement if it happens again.

I understand you perfectly because I just had the same problem with not one, but two, brand new ipod nanos. When you plug the headphones in the music comes through the headphones and through the external ipod speaker even though it should not once you plug them in. I set up a phone appt and they had no idea what to do but ship me a new (this would be the third) ipod. I asked if it was something in settings but they said no, that it was just defective. While I hate that you are having the same problem at least it isn't just me. Did you ever figure out a way to fix it?

I know what you all are talking about and you just have to shove it in harder...it DOES work. You'll feel stupid at first when the speaker turns off, but just push in the end so the white plastic part of the end of the headphone is flush with the ipod. If you've done this and it still comes out the speaker, then maybe it is defective. There's no other 'setting' to make this happen. Happy itunes...!!

The problem fixed when i reset it by flipping the hold then holding both menu and the center button for 6 secs. I can now control my volume on the headphones and dont have to worry about other people hearing my music through the external speaker.

Had the same issue: when plugging in headphones, the internal speakers AND the headphone would play.
Followed the advice to push in headphones till they are flush with the bottom of ipod-- and it worked!!

(funny they don't trouble shoot this when you call them for support. Seems like asking if the headphones are flush with the bottom of the ipod would be the FIRST thing they ask when you tell them you are having audio problems)
