Screen jumping and skipping Erratically when I touch it.

Mine does this too! It's completely random...I took it into the store and they refused to replace it. They opened up the display on mine and took a look at the MultiTouch connectors underneath. The guy brought the phone back out of the back and told me everything was fixed. On the way home, the problem happened again. I called the store and they said to reset keyboard settings, which of course didn't work. I now have to make another genius bar appointment see if they will replace it.

Then with this info, you could probably be looking at a ground loop or floating ground issue. I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up destroying the phones after a while. These screens are capacitive so you are causing voltage to be in places that it shouldn't be (on your fingertips) and screen can't handle it. If I were you I would use a standard 12v car charger and not the inverter.

Hi everyone-The reason why this is happening is because of the CHARGER you are using. I have a 32 gig Iphone 3GS and its worked perfectly since July. But Last week when i tried to use an old ipod charger with the iphone 3gs cable, my phone screen started jumping around like crazy. As soon as I unplugged it and restarted the phone, it stopped doing this. It also happened when I bought an aftermarket charger from amazon...I'm not an engineer so I can't explain volts and amps exactly, BUT, if voltage and amperes are not precise to an electronic device, it will make it act funny and could ruin it. I do know this first hand..at my job, i set up display cameras and they need a power cable that is made exactly for them. There are resistors, diodes, and other pieces on the board inside the chargers that could burn out the charger and device if they don't meet and/or exceed exact specs...

I've been having the same problem for a bit now! My home button stopped working as well a few days ago and my whole screen was replaced at an apple store. Everything seemed good for a few days but now the "screen jumping" and automatic selections are happening randomly again. Any updates on the cause/solutions? Anybody?

HE already did a restore as new iPhone....It's in his post...

My 3GS has been doing this for weeks. Did you ever get it solved? If so, HOW?

It must be your computer, as it is the only common point amongst all of your various problems. Do you have third-party software on it? That could easily be causing your problem.


I'd try formatting the hard drive on your computer and installing a fresh copy of Snow Leopard. Then I'd install a fresh copy of the latest iTunes (BEFORE doing ANYTHING else with your computer), and use it to download a fresh copy of OS 3.1 for your iPhone.

If you follow the Apple procedure, it likely will just work.

I almost never use the phone when it's plugged in, wait, it's got a mophie battery attached to it always...
Nope just disconnected it, and it's still completely out of control. It starts to move when my hand is a couple of inches away, or it used to, now it's pretty much moving on it's own all the time.

I used my 3G iPhone for a year with an inverter without a problem. My iPhone 3GS has had a similar problem. it's almost like there is a static charge build up. Turning off the iPhone 3Gs and placing my palm on it helps sometimes. This erratic behaviour has become worse. Sometimes it types without my fingers making contact.

Time to make an appointment.

Sometimes the zoom in accessibility options causes strange issues...

Ensure that zoom is turned off...

Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom

The first thing to do is to a Restore as a new iPhone. That way, all the factory settings will be restored and intact, and your problem will likely be solved.
