What is Error 11?

Hello all. This is my sis's Mac mini.

Somehow the Time Machine has failed to back up, the Menu Bar icon has that ! symbol within.

On my iMac, whenever there is such error, I just do a manual back up again and everything will be fine, but seems not the case on the mini, have tried backing up a few times but the error fail window message just keeps popping up.

I check the log of TM and it seems to report on Error 11, and also seems like it keeps failing to back up file by file from Library > Application Support folder. I tried deleting one file e.g. from Symantec that the log specify, and then another file from another folder would fail to back up.

Anyway to solve this? Besides erasing the TM drive and start all over? Which is it the final solution?

Thanks and cheers

Are you using Norton anti-virus? If so, that may be at least part of your problem. Many users here say it's worse than a virus! Uninstall it and, if you really thing you need an anti-virus product, get the free ClamXav.

At the very least, exclude your TM drive from it.

It may come to that, but don't start there. Start with #C3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

Hi all. Thanks for the reply.

So far I have:
- Uninstall Norton Antivirus
- Use Disk Utility to repair the external TM drive (no problems found)

*And still I fail to do a complete TM back up.*

Here's a sample of the log, *whenever I deleted the file, it keeps popping back:*

The TM back up just failed like 1 or 2 nights ago; And on my iMac, all I have to do is to manual back up at that point again, and everything will be fine.

But for this Mac mini, the TM failed error message keeps c'min back, and seems to be the same file.

I wouldn't mind erasing the TM drive and start all over, but provided the same error and problem would not come back

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks and cheers

Did you do the other things in #C3:

If it's a file you're sure you don't need, you can delete it. If not, for now, don't touch it. Instead, exclude it from TM. (Do NOT be deleting system files !)

  • c. If the file is on your internal HD, do a +Verify Disk+ (not permissions) on it. If that reports errors, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disc and use it's copy of Disk Utility to repair it.

  • e. Also exclude it from Spotlight indexing, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.

  • Those other things are listed for a reason !

Folks, I had some luck finally...I had to blow away my entire directory on my time capsule, by connecting to the drive and entering my password. This included that prior backups and even the link associated to my Macbook Air backups when you initial connect to the Time Capsule drive. After doing that, rebooting my MBA I was able to get a successful backup 49GBs without error.

Hope this helps someone out there...
