iPhone Contacts Restore

I recently needed to restore my iphone from a backup. When I did, everything restored to my phone (notes, apps, photos, etc.) except my contacts, which is the most important thing. I was wondering if there is something I need to do to restore my contacts OR if I need to do something different to ensure my contacts or backed up? If I can't fix it now, I at least want to make sure I am preparing myself in case this happens again.

Thanks,
Lee

Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, it isn't a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for this data. The iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer for contact info. How do you get by without having any contact info available on your computer, or having email addresses only on your computer, phone numbers only on your cell phone, and addresses who knows where?

With Windows, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007 along with calendar events, or with the address book used by Outlook Express with XP, or with the addresss book used by Windows Mail with Vista called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only.

With a Mac, this can be with the Address Book application, or with the Entourage address book.
