DVD9 to DLT??

Hi yiz

A client requires me to make a DLT from his DVD-9 disc (... so that he can put copyright protection on the reps). Sadly the DVD9 is the only existing copy of the DVD footage.

I was thinking that if I copied his Video TS folder (..and Audio TS) into a new folder that I could select this as the build folder within Studio Pro and format it to DLT in the usual way.

However when I try to do this an error box tells me that the dual layer break point cannot be found or isn't available. It isn't possible to select one on the chapter list given - all options are blanked out. The disc itself plays fine on all players so there'd appear to be no problem with the break point that was chosen on the the original when authored.

I'm not sure what software the client authored on but I can find out if this would shed light on the problem.

Does anyone have experience of this problem or does anyone know if it's possible to format to DLT from a DVD9 authored on another system?

Someone mentioned to me that Rep Houses don't like running from DVD9 as a Rep master source. Anyone know if this is the case?

Thanks for all & any suggestions.

Using a previous comment about converting between NTSC and PAL I think you have to get the assets out of the Video TS folder and go from there.

While I'm still in the early stages of expertise about DVD-9 I recall reading somewhere in the help files or elsewhere that the DLT is the most reliable (and thus most popular) media to move a project through replication.

Yep if you could find out what the disc was authored with that would help. Yes DLT is the industry standard and if you can budget for it DVDAfterEdit ME might be an app worth looking into.

If not then you could demux the project and author from scratch. Like I said though if we know what app the current project was authored with we can help with your options,

Is DVDafteredit able to know where the layerbreak is from a read back dvd-9 or dlt? I wonder why this cant be read back and how the replicator know. What i see is the only information about that is in the .lay file DVD Studio Pro creates (other programms use other files). So if you read back a an image from DLT and dont have the .lay file you are lost???

DSP4 is not a Mastering app it's an authoring app. The .lay file shouldn't be found on the master. It'll be in the build and then be removed when formatting. Depending on how you use Toast it may remove the .lay, .layout etc files too. Thats a general comment and no Toast cant format two DLTs. DSP can format DSP projects to DLT but not just any finished DVD you want...

Long story short, yes DVDAE ME can read back DLTs. I dont think it can read back DVD-9 discs but once you've got the build (VIDEO_TS directory) to the hard drive you are back in business. DVDAE ME will let you choose from the available Cells and then format Layer0 and Layer1 to DLTs,

You can ask questions here too:

Hi Jay R and everyone

Client tells me he authored on Encore and set the break point as automatic.

If I'm reading the posts above correctly there's no way of using DVD SP to either retrieve the client's original break point or set a new one from the DVD-R's VIDEO_TS info.

Price of DVD AE appears to be around 1300 so I don't think my boss will go for that.

Will tell my client he has to source a DLT drive to output to directly from his Encore system. If anyone has any other angles I'd be grateful for the suggestions.

Incidently and out of curiousity are Rep Houses likely to run DVD-9s from a DVD9 DVD-r master or is that just a total no-no.

Thanks to all for your help.
