Cannot restore iPhoto library due to "permissions"

My laptop HD was dying, so I replaced it. Rather than doing a full Time Machine restore, I decided to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard and just start all over and streamline my laptop dragging and dropping most documents from old manual backups, but the iPhoto library is the one thing that is only backed up on Time Machine.

Because I renamed the laptop and it's a fresh install, when I click on iPhoto and go to "Browse Backups" it does not go to my original iPhoto library backup.
If I navigate to the backup I want using the Finder to go through the Time Capsule, when I click on the iPhoto library and choose "Restore to..." I get the message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access 'iPhoto Library'."

If I simply drag the folder to iPhoto I get: "The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library. Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another library."

I have tried to check the permissions (get info) on the Time Machine and that folder, but I cannot see anyplace where my permission would be limited.

Anyway, looking for anyway to restore just the old iPhoto library from Time Capsule to my fresh laptop installation.

Very similar experience but with Aperture. No permissions or not enough. Convinced TM to try and restore to different locations after granting everyone in the neighborhood rights to TM including a stray dog that was passing by. The serendipitous moment was when I trashed all of the newly-created but empty Aperture Library files, opened Aperture and went to Import library or project. I then went to my time machine and opened it (right from Aperture) drilled down to a back-up from last week and said O.K. It is now 'merging' to two databases, the one from TM and the 'empty' one, just as it would if I had asked it to WiFi merge my MB Pro and the iMac. It's taking forever but it has mounted the missing projects, claims it was 'copying Masters' (whew!) and is now working on 'copying Previews'.

The key seems definitely to be not perform a restore from TM but to convince Aperture itself to import the missing library(s) as you would import any other set of pictures. I assume iPhoto would work in a similar fashion.

Hope this is useful :-)

I'm using iPhoto 9.3.2. There is no "Browse Backups" under "File" ... or anywhere else that I can see. And attempting to restore iPhoto Library from a Time Machine backup fails with the error message descrribed elsewhere in this thread, nor is there any way in Time Machine to modify the permissions of the iPhoto Library selected for restoration nor to compress it. Those things can evidently be done directly on the Time Machine backup, but that strikes me as a bit dangerous. I am running OS X 10.7.4.

This worked for me with iPhoto 11 in ML: Open TM to a point that you know has a good iPhoto Library. Select User>Pictures and click Restore. In my case, it then asked for my password and proceeded to copy that version of the Pictures folder into my home folder. When it finished, it took about half and hour, I had a completely restored iPhoto.

I'm not sure why that is happening. It may be doubling up the files in the picture folder.Try dragging your existing Pictures folder to another location e.g. desktop then let TM do its thing. It should restore the Pictures folder in the correct location. If that doesn't work you will still have your old Pictures folder on the desktop, and you could put it back.

Hi, by reading through the posts I am not entirely sure if any one has been able to restore their iPhoto library.

I found myself in the same position and was getting the permissions problem when trying to restore from Time Machine. I have worked out that the only way to restore is to navigate to the Pictures folder and restore that folder rather than trying to restore the actual library itself.

I hope this info is of use to you folks.
