Q: Since Snow Leopard, Can't shutdown

Hi to everyone,

Got an MBP 17" not the newest version but the previous one.



Installed 10.6, updated to 10.6.1

Now, I can't shut down the computer, it will restart everytime.

I've tried via the Apple menu, and the Power button.

Also, when I close the lid, instead of going to sleep and the little light "blinking", the light stays full on, and every 30 seconds or so, I can hear the DVD player turn on and off. No disk is in the drive.

If it goes to sleep without the lid down, same behaviour as above.

Tried to repair permissions but it did nothing to cure this.

Anyone with an idea or solution ????

    For heavens sake, _do not_ do an erase and install. Go to the Apple store and get them to help you.

    Installed 10.6 over 10.6.1 and it did not change the strange behaviour.

    So I fully restored from Time Machine and the original install CD the back-up I did just before the first 10.6 install, reverting to 10.5.8.

    After, I had to restore my iPhoto library and a couple of other files individually since there were changes to them after the 10.6 install.

    Guess what ?

    All is normal now.....

    When shut down via the apple menu, it stays shut down...

    When the lid is closed, it goes to sleep normally, the front light blinking and the DVD does not act up...

    So I don't know, I'll still go to Apple Store and see if they have a suggestion or solution.

    Meanwhile, I'll stay with 10.5

    Hi again,

    After a visit to the Apple Store, it was suggested that the Snow Leopard install over the Leopard might be the culprit and that a clean install should take care of this issue.

    I will do a clean install in a few days, after I replace my 150G HD for a 500G one, which was my intention anyway.

    So after these operations, I'll report back.

    After a visit to the Genius Bar at Apple Store, It was suggested to install Snow Leopard as a fresh install instead of just over Leopard.

    I wanted to replace my HD for a larger one anyway, so after I changed it, Snow Leopard was installed, Time Machine restored all my files, documents etc...
    Updated to 10.6.2.
    Checked Firmware update.
    Repaired premissions etc...

    Then, twice tried to shutdown or put to sleep and got the same stupid behaviour...

    Now, for some incredible reason, the machine is all behaving normally... Don't know why, maybe because of a couple of restarts... So go figure...

    Anyway, thanks to all for the help !!!

    So, the ghost of bizarre behaviour is back...

    I'm sorry to report that the sleep mode induces again a restart of the DVD player, and if I shut down via the Apple Menu, it restarts after a few seconds.

    I remember that after the SN install, there was a message stating that some applications were not compatible anymore. Certain applications in the Dock were with a Question Mark so I removed them from the Application Folder, and removed the icons from the dock.

    Could there be other incompatible Apps?

    Could it be the reason for this behavior?

    How to find them if so?

    when Permissions are repaired, I get this:
    ATTENTION : le fichier SUID « System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDA gent » a été modifié et ne sera pas réparé.

    Meaning something won't be repaired.

    Anyone with ideas??

    Just ignore such messages. After repairing permissions, the only thing of importance usually is that you receive a message that the permissions repair completed. [Here is a list of disk utility messages that can be safely ignored|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448].

    Thanks donv for the list,

    I've tried once more resetting the SMC with no change.

    One thing that might be a good clue: I just noticed that WHEN THE POWER CORD IS PLUGGED, there is the strange behavior.

    But WHEN THE POWER CORD IS NOT PLUGGED IN, and the MBP is on battery power only, I get normal behaviour...

    I again tried a different power cord and no improvement noticed so it doesn't seem to be from the power cord.

    As for the funny business, I observe that if I leave the screen open, it does go dark after a while, but I can still hear a faint whirring sound, probably the HD spinning, even after a very long time at rest...

    This happens to me to! Only thing is in stead of it not shutting down mine wont sleep. Its very annoying and drains my battery.

    Should I make a Genius appointment?

    You should make a Genius appointment,

    I went there a few weeks ago, got a great reception, and fantastic advice for a couple of things.

    Maybe they could help you with your specific problem.

    As for battery draining, I don't have that issue as all is normal when the battery is the source of power.

    I have trouble when the power cord is in, then no battery drainage.

    Hi all ... Again...

    I found this in the System Information, in the Material section under Power source.

    loosely translated from French, it means:

    And this is repeated 177 times + 4 times "power up" with the same date...

    Now, I never programmed anything in the Energy Saver...

    Could this have something to do with my woes???

    Here's the total (in french) copy of what's there...

    How can I reprogramm this ???
