I'm having the exact same thing. I just restored my iPhone after doing a reset of it. It seems to function just fine now.

By the way, there was nothing special that changed, but it sure does seem odd that both you and I had the same thing happen at almost the same time. I did upgrade the carrier settings on Friday and rebooted, but hadn't synchronized until just now.

Don't know that specific code, but I'll bet it has to do with a corrupted song in your iTunes library. Try this & see if it works(this is for error -69 on an ipod):

This error occurs when iTunes tries to send files to your iPod, but a file (or files) is unusable (something is wrong with it).

To figure out which file (or files) is causing the error, update to the latest version of iTunes and then do this:

1. Control-click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on your iPod icon in the iTunes Source pane, then choose Sync Songs from the shortcut menu.
2. Watch the display at the top of the iTunes window while your iPod is being updated. The name of the problematic file should appear in the display right before the error appears. Then remove the bad file from the list of songs to be synced to your iPod.
3. Select the iPod in the iTunes Source pane.
4. Click the Summary tab.
5. Select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox (please note that this checkbox is only available for an iPod configured to update automatically).
6. Select the appropriate item under Library in the sidebar and find the bad file in the list. (For example, if the file in question was a song you would select Music in the iTunes Source pane. If it were a video you would select Movies or TV Shows in the sidebar.)
7. Deselect the checkbox next to the file name.
8. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to update your iPod. If you have multiple problematic files in your iTunes library, you may need to repeat the other steps to remove them too.

To prevent future issues, you should delete the unusable files from your iTunes library, then restore them from a backup or reimport them from a CD.

If you're not able to isolate to any single file or if another iPod works with the same songs, then disconnect any other devices connected to USB or FireWire and try again. If the issue continues, then then try resetting your iPod. If the issue continues, then restore your iPod.

There is no more "Sync Songs" in the context menu -- at least not in 9.0 or 9.01 iTunes on Windows.

Come on Apple; please answer up.

I did just confirm that error code -6999 is NOT a song ID number in my collection. I get the exact same error as described at the top of this thread.

Symptoms before the error is thrown also include, the storage allocation status bar going to all blue (as if 100% full of music), though the captions below the bar still indicate other content is present (e.g., xxxKB for photos) and that there is still plenty of free space. After a few seconds of that, the storage display goes back to normal looking. It will cycle this way a few times but then eventually will throw the "-6999" error. Optionally; it may also throw an error message about not being able to write to the iPod disk (whatever that means.) This last is not consistent, though.

I've tried restoring to most current backup and to a week old backup; then try a sync after that. No help; still get the unhelpful -6999 error message.

Same error here, I've tried restoring from a previous backup and still cannot sync. Next step may be uninstall iTunes and reinstall.

This 3GS is my first iPhone, and I was really looking forward to an "Apple" experience... Feels more like a Windows based phone at this point.

Please help Apple!

Nah; if it was a Windows experience you know for sure that either or both would be true that:
A. somebody would have posted an explanation and a work-around, &/or,
B. there would be a white paper on it at the Microsoft support sites.

The Apple experience with this sort of thing is apparently to totally ignore the public. "I know nussing!"

By the way; the work around for me was to completely restore my iPod load. Took about 6 hours. Way fun... not. Still have the mysterious "Previous Libraries" heading in iTunes and had to sit through a rebuild of the Genius database.

Thanks for stepping up Apple. Not.

Hi,

I've had this issue too. I've been looking all over the Net to find a solution that would work to no avail. I called Apple tech today and while we were working to find a solution, I disabled NetBarrier X5 and tried to sync for the Nth time while NetBarrier was disabled.

Guess what, everything was back to normal syncing my IPhone 3GS... For whatever reason, NetBarrier X5 was blocking both my IPhone 3GS and my Apple TV. I've redefined the trusted domains on NetBarrier X5, which had been changed after an update (God only knows how and why).

That's it folks, the culprit was NetBarrier X5. For those not using this firewall, check out whatever other firewall you're using, including Apple's. It seems that Firewalls misinterpret the data and signal exchanges between the IPhone and ITunes or Apple TV and ITunes.

I hope this will help,

Regards,

Luc

ok now none of my apps are opening up and also the iPod on my iPhone only plays one song before crashing back to the menu screen.

And to top it all off I tried syncing again today and it's now saying error (-48)

Any more errors you wanna throw at me but not solve mr Apple? This phone seems more trouble than its worth. I dont wanna reset it for the 2nd time in a week especially if that is not the solution. Come on someone must have an answer.... surely if the error is identified with a specific code then it must have a solution?

Feb 13, 2010 5:25 PM in response to edgey642

I'm having the same problems as edgey642.
I redownloaded itnues 9.0.3 times, I resetted my itouch 64 Go about 8 times, erasing everything while doing it, either by the itouch itself or by the restore button from itunes.
I haven't been able to use my laptop to resync my itouch. Everytime I reconnect the itouch to my lapop, it asks me if I want to restore to a previous back up or sync it as a new device.
The previous back up option crashes.
The new device starts a syc half the time, but crashes after about 5 to 10 minutes with a message saying that the device's time out or time expired?
I'm not even able to sync my library anymore...

Hey Guys,

I've been having this message for ages...

Basically, all I can ever do to get slightly around this issue is to restart my iPhone to its factory settings, which I've done...I dunno...25 times now? This is because I can only ever get one update out of it at a time. If I want to sync new songs, then I just have to start the whole process over again. Even as I speak, my phone is restoring >.< Oh, and it never can load any previous backups

The only problem is that now, even restarting it isn't doing anything. I can't even get my music back on.

What really ****** me off is that Apple doesn't even have a **** page for this error message. What type of support is that? This is my only Apple product, and it is more screwed up by anything else I have, and the support for it is terrible. woo.

So if anybody figures something out, it'd be much appreciated...

I had this problem when I first got my 3GS over 6 months ago. I used my one "free" call (it cost my £15 in call charges) to apple support to find out what was going on. They couldn't even tell me what -6999 was!

In the end I managed to fix the problem by doing a full factory restore which took around 6 hours.

The problem is that it's started to happen again. I've updated iTunes to 9.0.3, restarted my iPhone, PC and iTunes numerous times but to no avail. I get "Can not write to disk, Sync timed out", -48 and -6999 errors.

Apple are the worst company I've ever had to deal with regarding support. I would expect a search for -6999 would turn up an official explaination of the error and perhaps a way to fix it, but obviously I'm living in a fantasy world.

I'm pretty sure that Apple don't read these forums and they are only intended for us to ***** and moan to ourselves.

These technical glitches are so annoying that they completely ruin the iPhone experience which, apart from connecting to iTunes and the endless sync cycle, is generally good.

At this point in time I'm seriously looking at an Android device as an alternative.

Feb 16, 2010 7:20 AM in response to GavinArrowsmith

I've actually managed to fix the problem without having to do a factory restore.

There is a post here that helped me:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1032258

To quote Rick:

"I went into the device manager in Windows and it listed a device called "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver". I checked the properties and selected "Update Driver." -- and it downloaded a driver update. After rebooting, it appears my problems are fixed. I am getting constant communication now from my USB 2.0 port that is connected to my iPhone."

This worked for me too! 🙂
