Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

Hello.

I have the same problem with my MBP (2010). For nearly a year I have been using my Mini Display Port -> DVI to HDMI converter -> HDMI switch -> BenQ PE8720 projector with no problem.

One day I wanted to use my MBP to screen a movie in a cinema, but it did not work. The projector was recognized properly with right name in the preference on the Mac, but no signal to the projector.

This problem occured after a software upgrade in april (Now I am running OSX 10.6.7), so I think this is a software issue. I have also tried the mini DisplayPort -> DVI to antother BenQ display and that worked fine. Also all kinds if reboot, PRAM, different settings, different Mini Display port and so on.

There are many others with similar problems, so this is probably an OSX issue. 

Will there be an OSX update to fix this or is there any solution to this?

My workaround (shutdown tv and startup again) wasn't eventually enough - the problem continued.

I ordered new adapter from DealExtreme (because those are so cheap) and it worked (and is still working after few times of use)!

This is very weird problem, but I'm sure that OS update is involved to this problem somehow.

If the problem continues with the new adapter, I'll let you know again.

Hey, i've just bought this cable adapter from deal extreme and tried it with 3  of my LCD tv's (2 samsung, and one daewoo). I've got no signal on the Daewoo's, but tried it with another devices (an xbox360) and had no issues.

Do you know what is going on here??

5/12/2011 - YOU NEED A BETTER HDMI CABLE

Just received my shipment from macsales! $20 hdmi-mini display port adapter (thunderbolt) for my 2011 mbp 15"....

I grabbed an hdmi cable that I use to connect my 24" samsung to my pc desktop's video card.. The cable works fine for this setup. When I plugged it in to the hdmi-mdp adapter, no signal.. Tried it on my 32" sony, no signal..

I then grabbed a higher grade HDMI cable I use for my ps3 and 32" sony. WORKS!! Then tested on 24" samsung WORKS!!

I was originally using a cheapo $5 hdmi cable from amazon to do this.. It only seems to work with the higher-end hdmi cable (Pure Audio HDMI cable) I've had that I purchased from Sam's Club for only $10..

I suggest to anyone with this problem, grab a 1.4 grade HDMI cable and see if that does the trick. mbp clearly supports hdmi-mdp (thunderbolt) adapter looks awesome!!

I had the same issue that several people mention (MacBook Pro screen turns blue for 1-2seconds, but unable to recognize the LCD TV).

Checked everything and did resets (PRAM, NVRAM and SMC), but no results. Finally checked the manual of the TV and in the troubleshooting it said:

“The HDMI –HDCP procedure might take a few seconds before the TV shows the picture from a device. If the TV doesn’t recognize the device and the screen shows no picture,try switching from one device to another and back again to restart the HDCPprocedure”

So with my laptop connected to the TV,  I turned on my DVD player and switched from HDMI 1 (laptop connection) to HDMI 2 (DVDplayer) and back.

Voila I got instant connection on my laptop and the problem was solved. Later that night I had to repeat the procedure, because the same issue occurred, but again it worked.

Tonight again the laptop didn’t recognize the TV, switching to DVD did the trick and the laptop recognized the TV as soon as I switched to DVD, however when I switched back to the laptop it lost the connection again, so I had to switch a few times until it worked.

So it looks like it works for me..... eventually

Hope this is helpful for more people (if not do try to do the resets, as well).

Setup:

Laptop: MacBookPro7,1 (mid 2010) with OSX 10.6.7

Cable: Bandridge HDMI v1.3b (1080p – 36bit)

MDP to HDMI adapter: Cablesson Mini DisplayPort Adapter

TV: 42PFL9632D/10CINEOS Philips LCD Television

i've bought 10 days ago a minidisplay to hdmi adapter and had for about 1 week no problems using my panasonic 42" GT30. Now it doesn't work anymore. Everytime i plug the cable to my tv, my macbookpro late 2009 display turns blue for half second and nothing happens, when i unplug it same blue screen for half second. It seems like my macbook see that i plug a device but it doesn't give signal. Last time it was working i didn't had it mirroring, so now i can't put mirror anymore because in the display settings the TV is not recognized.

It's really strange sice the osx didn't update...

• Went to Best Buy

• Paid for a DYNEX Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter ($25)

• Came home and plugged in the adapter then the HDMI to DVI cable to the monitor. (Note: Monitor is a LG Flatron L22WTG) - DID NOT WORK

• iMac knows monitor is plugged in and I can change the resolution on both monitors and mirror. (Note: Changed to every resolutions with/without mirror image.) - DID NOT WORK

• Restarted computer - DID NOT WORK

• Turned off/on LG monitor many times - DID NOT WORK

• Unplugged/plugged back in many different ways - DID NOT WORK

• Changed the HDMI to DVI cable with a better cable - DID NOT WORK

• Installed BootCamp with Windows 7 - *BOTH WORK 100%*

• Rebooted to OS X 10.6.7 (Snow Leopard) - DID NOT WORK

• Installed Windows XP - *BOTH WORKED 100%*

• Reinstalled OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard) - *BOTH WORKED 100%*

• Updated OS X from 10.6.4 to 10.6.7 - DID NOT WORK

Seems to be a driver problem with the new update (10.6.7). I will not update again till drivers are fixed.

this is interesting and seems like it could very well be a driver issue, im in the process of trying to figure out how to revert the drivers back to the 10.6.4 ones, any help would be appreciated.

Have the same problem, everything worked fine in february but not now, haven't used it linked to a TV in between.

The 10.6.7 update occurred in march so that could be the problem?  Don't want to restore system back to a date prior to the update, so is there a way to remove it?  Or does anyone know how to report it to Apple as a bug?

I am another victim of Apple's unwilling policy to help….They know this issue for almosta year. 10.6.7 still does not have fix and we are still waiting…..

Well, at least it was the answer for my situation.  Myself, like many I was having issues with my MiniDisplayPort on my late 2010 model 13" MacBook Pro (2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory).  I could use my MDP to hook up to a VGA signal (using a monoprice MDP to VGA cable--no adapters, just the cable with both ends).  So, I knew that it was not my MDP...  After reading this entire post it struck me that since my MBP has a MDP that also transmits audio, and my monoprice MDP to HDMI cable did not, that maybe that was the answer...and it was!!  Went to the apple store (but you can find one anywhere) and purchased the Kanex MDP to HDMI 10' cable with audio support and viola! it solved my problem.  I can now hook up to the 32" Vizios (with multiple resolutions, I might add...someone said that it was a resolution issue...but that is not the case, because if the computer cannot even see the external monitor, there is no way to adjust for resolution or refresh rate on that computer), and any other HDMI device, and not only receive picture, but also audio as well.

So, it's not an issue with OS 10.6.7, or earlier, it's an issue with the MDP on the MBP needing to be able to also send audio...I don't understand why, as I only purchased the one cable, so I haven't torn it apart to see the different leads...but it worked for me.

Thats nice it was the awner to you but I can only use (my adpter) this under 10.6.5 or before. I can not use the same adpter on 10.6.7 but you should be able. Just the driver issue in 10.6.7 will not let some of the adpters work. They know about it but don't want to fix it. No way I'm spending so much money to just adpters to find what one works and all the time when it works just fine 10.6.5.

Does your adapter support both audio and video? I've looked at the driver lists...and I can't tell where they removed drivers from 10.6.5 to 10.6.7, only added them.  Here is the link for 10.6.7 and here is the link for 10.6.6 

What kind of adapter are you using?  And, if you are using an adapter, what kind of HDMI cable is it, what quality is it?
