Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

This is the link. It works under 10.6.7 but no display. Shows the monitor is working but monitor auto sleeps and doesn't work but in 10.6.5 works 100% with monitor never going to sleep. I did this 5 times just to make sure that was the problem.

First of all...when you say that it "shows the monitor is working" what do you base that on?  The easiest way to be proof-positive that you have a secondary monitor connected and that the computer recognizes it is to check your system profiler, under "Graphics/Displays" and be sure the "Display Connector" shows that you are attached to the external monitor.  The reason I say that, is some people take the quick flash to blue of the monitor to mean that they are connected, and that is what the computer is trying to do, it just doesn't connect, usually because of a passive connection (which, the adapter that you have uses passive connections).

Second...according to the reviews on the link that you attached, there are a lot more people that are having problems with that same adapter...  Now, not knowing their system designs, I can't say this with perfect accuracy, but I would guess that it is more likely the adapter that is at fault, and not the system.

Third...still don't know what version HDMI cable you are using, and that might be important.  While it is true that all versions of HDMI are backwards compatible with previous versions...but they can't go forward.  So, if you are using a 1.1 HDMI, I don't know that it won't work, but it's possible it won't.

Fourth...one of the great things about the mac store is that you can take your device and all peripherals (including the tv) into the mac store and the folks at the genius bar can help you, or at least take a look.  Now, I know they call it a genius bar, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will have an answer, however, 2 or 3 minds is better than one.

Well the monitor works in 10.6.7. I can change the resolution and everything but I can not see anything on the monitor. Says the model and all the resolutions it supports under system preferences and about this mac. If I downgrade to 10.6.5 it works 100% doing everything the samething. Doesn't matter to me it works 100% in 10.6.5 and will not be updating till Lion comes out. Hope it works fine in Lion if not I will downgrade again. I have used a few different HDMI cables and they all work and it all shows that it works just no display in 10.6.7.

Do you have the displays mirrored?  If you can see two sets of resolutions (one for your screen and one for your monitor) then you are communicating properly.  Does the external give an error such as "out of range" or "no signal"?  It could be a resolution setting...remember, you only have to change the resolution for the external.  Still, I would check in Displays for two things: 1, be sure to check the box that says "Show displays in menu bar" and, 2, be sure to mirror displays.

Come on I work in the IT field. Yes, I have changed to every resolution with/without mirrored display. Monitor just goes to sleep. I don't use mirror display in 10.6.5 and it works great even in all different resolutions.

As do I (work in the IT field)...but sometimes the obvious answer is the overlooked answer, so I was pointing out the obvious. (not that one has to have the mirror displays option checked).  Another obvious, and possibly needless thought, you have verified with multiple cables?  Also, have you attempted multiple externals?  Have you proven that your MDP works by using a MDP to VGA connection? (yes, that has a different range, but it proves MDP functionality)  And, if all of those fails, we can always do at last what we should have done at first...we can pray about it!!!

Hello all, here is a new but related set of circumstances, I have a 13 inch MBP 2011, Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and LG 27 inch monitor.  When connected and woken from sleep on one occasion the screen did not receive a signal, a restart fixed this and it has not happened since.

What I have noticed is a series of lines on the desktop wallpaper after I minimise a window, almost as if the edge of the window has burnt the screen but it follows the pattern of the app minimising.  To clarify, it is as if an outline of what has been opened is maintained on the desktop wallpaper.  I have hooked up an identical MBP to test my graphics card is not faulty and it did exactly the same thing, guessing it is a refresh issue but could not find anyone else with the same issue so thought it might be worth posting.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

My guess is that your graphics card needs to switch...I would try this and see if manually switching your graphics works to remove the lines.

Sorry about that...completely missed the "13"...so, as you have noted, the 13" MBP does not have the dual graphics...

Is it the external display leaving the lines, or the MBP display?  If external, what kind of display is it--a lcd, led, or plasma?  If it's a plasma...static burn in happens quite frequently, and rather quickly, in the first 100 hours of use.

I did something pretty close by changing the color and try to detect and after about 3 minutes of messing around with it it started working. You would think Apple would fix this problem but I guess their to busy making money in other areas.

Ok so i just spent way to long figuring this out, i have a 24" apple cinema display and a unibody 13" macbook 2008. The port wouldn't recognize the display.

The only this that worked was unpluging the monitor(power) and pluging it back it, somehow that managed to reset the port.
