Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

Went to the store and bought some expensive HDMI's: no difference.  Went to the Apple store and bought Belkin-brand adapter, and it works fine (no sound, but I may be able to find a workaround).  At least for me the problem was a bad adapter (Inland brand, I believe, from Fry's).

I'm using the MBP 2011.  I had same issue.

I bought cheap cables from amazon.com (minidisplayport and 25' hdmi cables $3 and $7 respectively).  couldn't get the tv display no matter what i did...then i unplugged each calbe and the tv power.  once i plugged the tv in and connected everything together it all worked. they key was unplugging the tv (as I tried every other combination before that)

this happened twice and the solution was unplugging the tv both times...

    i'm using a 40" sony bravia.

Ok i just got my mini-DP and couldn't figure it out either.. started messing around with it and stumbled across something that might help. Does the tv screen stay blank or does your mac default background come up, if it comes up try dragging the window over and it should pop up on your screen. Hope this Helps

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

I too am now seeing this.  Though, I was able to upgrade to Lion with my dual monitor configuration, I am now unable to display over mini DVI connector.  It recognizes it as attached, the monitor, and available resolutions - no image.

Panasonic 40" and HP 15" monitors running on Mac Pro running ATI Radeon 4870 512MB card.  Both monitors used to work interchangably on the main DVI and mini DVI ports.  Now, both work on the main DVI connector - neither produce an image on the mini DVI.

This appears to have begun failing somewhere between Sep 2nd and Sep 10th...  Don't know exactly, since I've not checked machine daily.  Guessing a recent update.

This started to happen to my macbook after an update which I got yesterday. I think it has to do something with the software update.

Were you able to fix this problem?

Yep, this definitely worked before one of the previous updates.....

when will there be a fix, seems pretty widespread. MBP Running late versions of OSX are not getting signal out to their external displays despite their Mac recognizing the connected displays.... whats up?

I have the same problem, 2 days ago all work fine, then I update and reboot and can't see anymore output on TV.

All test done, but problem is the update 2011-005. I call apple and say can't do roolback, I need to reinstall the Snow Leopard with the DVD/CD....

i don't understand why on a unix system is not possible to do a rollback to a previous patch/kernel patch....

    I have

    MACBOOK PRO 2010 version.

    Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update

Mini DVI = Cablesson (the adapter!).

I already write to Cablesson company and give this forum page to share this problem, because this is a problem for his company too... the adapter didn't work anymore... so may be they found a solution i HOPE...

I already test with the program gfxcardStatus (some one post here) but my macbook have only 1 video card output so is not supported....

I try to boot with cable attached and try to open the console logs but no errors found.

I try to put on different's hdmi on TV, i put on TV like "PC" and try to auto sensing but no change...

what I see is on preferences of display is not recognize the TV at all.... because don't see at all any other connected device....

I hope for a fix and not a reinstallation, because I need to do a backup of 250GB and I don't have space for do this....

    Regards

I sent the adaptor back to Cablesson and they gave me a working replacement. I guess they have changed something in their hardware too. Now works for both my MBP and Macbook.

Jarry I write to trainspotter  he buy like me a cable called cablesson, so I ask him if he take it back to cablesson directly or he contact first his seller on ebay ( I buy it from Ebay).

We know problem is "software" but this could be solved HARDWARE too... so we need a solution, if on warranty they change it, better.... if not wait to solve on software o do the rollback of patch (so reinstall to later version 10.6.7).

    regards
