Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

It seems millions of people are having problems with external displays and mac.  This is rather hilarious given that computers have supported external displays for decades and Apple can't even get it working in this modern age.

Is there a question here?

My gripe is that there is no buttons (or command line tools) to "force detect" and turn display's on / off like in Ubuntu.  This means it's very difficult to diagnose the problem.  It could be that some people have a broken adaptor, but since there is no software tool to diagnose hardware failures, there is no way people can distinguish between hardware and software failures.

I'm still having this issue and haven't come up with a solution...

First I purchased the adapter in BestBuy and it worked for 2 days then I got the no signal message,

Then I returned it and went to apple and bought a Moshi adapter, it worked for a little while and now I'm in the same boat again.

To me that sounds like the adapters are getting burnt out.  I too have expensive wires, and have tried all different combinations of wires and adapters to no avail. 

I'm really upset there are no apple responses on this...

Dude you saved me a **** lot of trouble... and for that I thank you... My display port was going to the blue screen and back in like a second and it would not display on the TV... so this is what I did

1. Connect all the cables and keep the TV switched off..

2. Follow what Gerrycgc24 has said and if your Mirror Display is already checked then uncheck it.

3. Switch on the TV and Switch it off

4. Now follow what Gerrycgc has said and Check the Mirror Display again

5. Now switch your TV on

6. If it works thank Gerrycgc24

7. If it does not work, go back to Step 1 and repeat till you can arrive at Step 6.

I purchased the wire by-passing any converter from the lightening port and it seems to be working at the moment. So I'm wondering if the converters are getting burnt out 2-3 plays in?

Hello, I've been unable to find my problem's solution here so I have to ask.

Old 2009 Macbook

Connecting the Cables to LG 42", all I get on the TV is Apple's weird space Nebula screen saver. It's not even my own screen saver shot. I can freely wave the mouse over the TV, but cannot get any sort of picture from the laptop, except if i'm changing the screen saver!

Finger trouble? Nothing seems to work.

Update....... Gerrycgc24 on page 2 suggestion worked fine......

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.

In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.

The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.

You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.

Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

this is abseloute ******** i bought a moshi hdmi adapeter thingo for bloddy $50 dollars from jb-hi-fi worked abseloutley great for the first week no problems i just had to set up mirror displays and all of that and it worked, now all of a sudden my laptop isnt picking anything up ANYTHING ive tried 2 different tv's and all i get is no signal, the laptop isnt picking up the tv what so ever. I cant even go to arrangments/mirror displays and play around in there etc because its not picking anything up! outrages this is. Does this sound like a software or cord problem? my hdmi cord is about 3 years old if it helps and the moshi adapter about a week... oh and i have a late 2011 macbook pro 13' version 10.72 im currently updating my software to see if that helps.

Locky124, I am having the exact same problem. The arrangement tab doesn't even show up because there isn't a display being recognized. My screen, however, blinks blue everytime I unplug or plug in the hdmi or the moshi adapter. If anyone has a solution to this, I would love to hear it.

exact same problem !!!! so annoying, bought hdmi cable and moshi mini display port to hdmi less than a month ago it worked perfectly until recently my macbook doesnt even pick up the tv or flash blue, nothing. i tried different hdmi cable different tv's. the tvs recognise the hdmi in input but not the mabook.

yeah mine doesnt even have the blue screen anymore..mine worked perfectly but now its like theres no cable connecting the 2 and its only a week old, its meant to be the top notch adapters..oh and updating did nothing i am now 10.75
