how can i get the best quality for dvd?

yesterday i was looking a professional dvd... and the quality was stunning!so i took my last "home made" dvd and the quality was very bad.
usually i capture my video with final cut pro 5 from a mini dv cam. then after a lot of work with FCP i export my video: i use export using compressor 2. here i use dvd best quality 90 min as settings. then i import it in Dvd Studio pro 4. i make menu, i create chapter index and all other stuff. then i build in dvd studio pro and test it in apple dvd player and all seems ok: quality is good. then i burn it in toast 7.and here is the problem: if i look the dvd on my tv it looks good but if i look my dvd on my mac the quality become very bad. i know that this is normal but my question is: if i look a dvd film the menu is not bad (there i can't see the pixel around text) and if there are some photo in it (or slideshow) they looks very good. in all dvd that i have done i can't obtain the same quality (or at least similar...).
I know that this is a general question but if someone has some time to help me explaining how you make your dvd i will be gratefull.
thanks a lot in advance and always sorry for my bad english

DVD Player doesn't give the best looking picture in general. If you have the current DVD Player application, at least try turning off the deinterlace option on the View menu. If that is on it will halve the vertical resolution.

The other discs you tried may have a better more friendly towards video design than you've used. Look to see what text size and color choices they made.

Try your own disc using VLC ( http://www.videolan.org/), it makes DVDs look nicer than DVD Player. If yours looks ok in that then don't worry too much about it.

When you said that you made the DVD with Toast, did you use the DVD from Video_TS option? That's what you should have used, some of the other options might lead to Toast recompressing the video.
