I run Gmail via IMAP. Since performing a clean install of Snow Leopard my Mail.app (version 4.1) has taken my Gmail IMAP account offline and is returning the following error message:
"The server returned the error: Account exceeded bandwidth limits. (Failure)"
I can also no longer access Gmail via my iPhone 3G. I can access Gmail via the web interface with no problems at all.
Im having the same issue. Ive been reading around a bit and no one really has a fix. It is likely something with Snow Leopard... It happened to me when I changed an email filtering rule which caused a bunch of mail to be transferred from a bunch of different boxes into the rule filtered box. Right after that gmail apps shut me out of my mail. I tried to switch it back, but im now locked out of gmail. APparently it unlocks after 24 hours... but will lock up again if the mail transfer quotas are exceeded again. Hoping someone figures this out ASAP!
Funny thing is that its JUST apple mail on my Mac Pro. Apple Mail on my MacbookPro (also SL) works just fine. Entourage on my Mac Pro also works as does Mailplane and the web inerface.
REALLY annoying. My Mac Pro with Apple Mail has been spinning on since Sept 25 wtih no luck.
Not true....still happening....tech support didn't even know of it...wasn't in their release note docs..I had to point it out to them on the support site. They're researching it now.
Problem FIXED. SOLOUTION FOUND. Read the fix that Kegan from apple support and myself found:
Step 1. Use finder to locate the /<computer name>/Library/mail/mailboxes folder. Look for a folder called "recovered messages (your mailbox name).mbox. If you see it filled with emails, kindly drag it to the desktop. If you don't see it filled with emails, kindly drag it to the desktop anyways.
Step 2. Open Apple Mail and go to preferences/accounts. Highlight the offending IMAP Gmail account and DELETE your IMAP gmail with the "-" icon. Close Apple Mail.
Step 3. Go to System Preferences and create a new dummy user. Log onto that dummy user.
Step 4. Open Apple Mail and go through the initial dialogue to set up your long lost IMAP gmail account. Give it a few minutes to set itself up and start downloading all your emails. You don't have to wait for the whole thing if you don't want...just a few minutes so you can see the labels listed and can click one of them to see the emails in there.
Step 5. Close Apple Mail and log out of that account and go back into your normal account. Open Apple Mail and set up your old account again.
Step 6. Grab that beer you so richly deserve. You ARE the man (or woman)!
THIS FIXES THE IPHONE "WRONG USERNAME AND PASSWORD" PROBLEM AT THE SAME TIME. I changed nothing on my Iphone, went and looked, and it worked suddenly.
Happy Mackin'! (Yeah, I know it's another name for making out)
This just started happening to me with 10.6.2. I believe it started precisely after I updated to 10.6.2. Quite frustrating. At least gmail has a good web interface to work with until this gets sorted out. What ever was done to "fix" this in 10.6.2 seems to have broken it for me!
I've had this problem since yesterday with one of my gmail accounts. 😟 As mentioned with everyone else, if I log in via the web interface, I have no problems - only when I access the account via Apple Mail.
Has anyone tried the fix posted? Does this fix the issue for good or will I keep having to create a 'dummy' account every time my account locks?
I do hope that Apple releases a proper fix for this so I don't have to fiddle about.
I just tried the fix suggested without luck. I too had just upgraded to 10.6.2 when this issue hit me. I think what sparked it was trying to send a 5mb attachment, which I had done many, many times previously. It seems to only affect my Mac. I have a droid with gmail that works like a charm thankfully.
I've got the same problem as well, and the fix isn't working. I'm getting the same bandwidth error message when I try to set up my Gmail in the dummy user account. I think the problem started when I tried emailing a large attachment using Mail.app. I got an error message that the attachment exceeded the limit, and I think that shortly after that is when Gmail stopped working. My iPod Touch is also unable to access the Gmail account, but I can log in at the website.
