Default key commands "Bonking"

Hi all,
Just picked up Logic Pro Studio. On numeric keyboard, as I try to start and stop with 0, I get a "apple bonk". Also astrik "record" and other short cut keys. Watching a tutorial and see that these keys are suppose to do something. How can I reset default command keys or adjust these key to work properly.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Also, as I click on the R or backward arrow (in the key command global window) I have greyed out information on the right side window called assignments about a Frontier TranzPort controller which was recognized on install. Could be the TransPort. Now what? I tried Initialize all key commands (to try to reset to default) but no luck.

Checked out the Tranzport. It works fine. I have key commands on computer keyboard and control from Tranzport so I guess numeric key commands and Tranzport can't be used at the same time. (or on the same computer). I also have the command 8 controller for pro tools and that controller and the tranzport can't be used at the same time. So if that's the deal and there's a trade off to use the numeric keys or transport, guess I'd pick the tranzport. If anyones useing the numeric keys and tranzport together, please let me know.

(seams I should be able to though or at least assign those numeric keys for commands, but they just "bonk".)

Perhaps the tutorial you watched was made using LP8? The default key commands are different between the two, and I believe R is the default record command for version 9. If you never owned LP8, perhaps someone would be willing to export the default key commands for you which you could then import. Or you can simply reassign the ones that matter to you. This is what I did moving from LP7 to 9, since there were some new ones I liked and some old ones I wanted to keep.

To reassign a key command, open the key commands menu (option+k). Find the command you want from the list by browsing or using the searchbar in the upper right corner. Select the desired action, click the learn assignment button and then press the key(s) you want to assign. Then press the learn assignment button again.

thanks for the reply jdredge,
He was useing 9 in the tutorial but probably had earlier versions as you described. I deleted tranzport from control surface, repaired disc, trashed prefs (com. apple playlist and playlist cs. reset defaults (although I've only been on it for a week and didn't change anything. ) I haven't hit it hard for system specs but I'm running 10.5.7 with Logic pro 9. Do you think it makes a difference if I went to 10.5.8 and logic 9.0.1? Or are these the new defaults and that wouldn't matter. One more thing, as I look at key command list... what is a up arrow (like a greater than or less than symbol but points up) with a line over it , and what is an arrow that kinda swoops down from the right and goes left?

Thanks again for writing, I'll try your suggestion.

Are you saying you get the sound when you're searching the key commands window, or just when you try to execute the commands? Look through the key commands and make sure the keys you're using are in fact assigned to something. On mine, "/" is not assigned to anything, nor was "*" until I assigned it manually. There are a lot of start/stop playback options in the global key commands, try to find what you're looking for there and assign the keys as you please.

The upward pointing arrow represents the "control" key, and the left pointing arrow you mentioned I believe is the return key.
