Archive Utility freezes and will not close--

Okay, bizarre takes another twist. The Archive Utility popped up to open a zip file, it made it the first one third, then it stopped. "Cancel" does not work, it is not affected by the "force quit" because it does not show up there, and it will not let me quit and restart the program.

Short of holding the power button down to kill the machine, is there any other suggestion or course of action?

You can try Restarting/Force Quitting the Finder.

Have you done any Disk Maintenance lately?

You could try the Unarchiver to see if it's your Archive utility or not...

I just went through a new install due to errors, and had used the automatic archive utility several times in the past few days. This just will not close and does not show up in the force quit menu, and I was looking for anything short of the controlled crash by power off.

Can you open Activity Monitor & see if a Process is hung that you can Force Quit there?

I opened Activity Monitor, did not find Archive Utility listed, went to "all processes" and still do not find Archive Utility listed, but the stupid little box hangs in front of everything on the desktop and any open applications.

I don't think it's called that, perhaps BomArchive helper or such, but can you move the AM Window enough to look for any Process in Red, or sort by CPU% to see if something is using a lot of CPU?

I went to Activity Monitor and then to the BomArchive Helper-- it would not quit, but when I used force quit the box finally closed and the red/green ratio in the box took a huge leap into the green zone.

Thank you.

Now I need to figure out what I did, and how not to do it again.
