"Unable to open the specified Video Output device"

After years of no problems with my mini-dv deck being used through firewire as a preview deck all of a sudden this message pops up

"Unable to open the specified Video Output device"
It may be in use by another application, incorrectly connected or may be conflicting
with a sound input device"

I am the only person that uses the computer and I know nothing has changed.......any thoughts
?

The first thing I'd have to ask is what, if anything has changed since it last worked? Any upgrades or updates to the OS, QuickTime, FCP or other apps? Any new hardware added, externally or internally?

Next, have you tried another deck or DV camera to see if it works? Tried another Firewire cable? Have you tried connecting your DV deck to another Mac to see if it works there? Have you tried seeing if iMovie recognizes the deck? Have you tried anything at all?
