My 60GB iPod Classic Won't SYNC Since iTunes 9 Update!

I keep getting this messege whenever I try to put music onto my 60GB Classic iPod from iTunes 9:

*The iPod cannot be synced An unknown error occurred. (-48)*

Is there anything that I can do to fix this or does apple have to fix this bug into for my problem to be solved? If anyone knows how to manually fix this big, please reply back to me in this thread.

Thanks.

Hello FutureRockStar3,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!

Try this:
1. Plug in your iPod and close iTunes.
2. Go to "My Computer". Click on the iPod drive once. Go to File, and then click Properties.
3. Go to the Tools tab. Under "Error Checking", click Check Now.
4. Check both boxes. One says "Automatically fix file system errors" and the other says "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". Place a check mark next to each of these options and hit Start.

The scan may take several minutes or more to complete, but once it has, go ahead and restart iTunes, and try re-syncing files to your iPod.

Others have had luck with the solution provided in this Apple support document. It does say error 50 but may apply to your situation as well. It's worth a shot.

If still no luck, it may be a good idea to Restore the iPod via iTunes.

Hope this helps.

Just to add to B-rock's reply - the error may be related to the issues reported with iTunes 9 (scan this forum and you will see many posts about older iPods and iTunes 9).

You should definitely go through the steps B-rock offered, you may be one of the lucky ones with a working older iPod with iTunes 9. But be aware, though, that if you restore your iPod and are still unable to sync, you will have erased all of the music on the iPod (it will still be on your PC, however).

Thanks for all of your help planb77! I honestly, didn't think running that error check was going to fix this problem that I was having but luckly, it did! I wonder if I will have to do the same thing on the desktop but maybe I won't have to if it did repair the my iPod.

What version of the Apple iPod do I have? Back then, it was called the 60GB iPod Video. I think it is at least three years old or so.

Thanks once again for all of your help planb77! I really thought that this was going to be a real headache to fix so I am very, very happy with the result here!!!

I gave you another five points by marking your last response as helpful so you got all of your ten points! What version of the iPod do I have anyways? Is it the iPod Classic or something else?

Do you think I will have to do the same thing on the desktop with my iPod because this took about an hour to complete? Hopefully, I won't have to if this error check fixed my iPod.

Well, thank you. Much appreciated.

As to what exact iPod model and generation you have, I would check out this Apple support document.

[Identifying iPod models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353]

No, you shouldn't have to do anything else. If you are referring to performing a disk check on your desktop's hard drive, it wouldn't make a difference because it's a separate hard drive. You can certainly run one on it anyways although it would have no effect on your iPod. 😉 Hope this clears things up a bit.

Thanks for the kudos. I glad that the problem was resolved and your suggestion worked. I hate being the bringer of bad tidings, but it seems like iTunes 9 is causing all sorts of problems.

As far as the points - it's nice to get them, but I think you'll agree that we are here to help first and foremost (though I'm glad you were able to get the additional points, since you DID fix the problem).

Sure thing GLNHP! I do appreciate the suggestions that you offered but the solved points were meant for planb77 but it's still cool that you ended up with ten points out of it!

After reviewing the iPod list, I am pretty sure that my iPod is the first version of the "Fifth Generation" iPod. It looks exactly like the iPod Classic. What are your feelings on the first version of the Fifth Generation iPod planb77 and GLNHP? Do you guys think it is a good iPod or no? I have had it for at least three years now and it still works great! Is this iPod considered old and out of date now? From what I see, they are still making it to this day.

I am thankful that this problem got resolved as well because I am seeing that iTunes 9 is causing a lot of problems with other iPod users so I thought that it wasn't going to be as easy a fix as it was.

The 60GB Video (5th gen) is an excellent device. I've had one since December 2005 (and have since passed it along to my teenage son). It's still going strong. The only issues after almost four years - there is a line going across the middle of the screen and the battery life is not what is used to be (but that's to be expected).

The differences between the Classic and the 5th Gen are:

# the front is no longer glossy plastic; the Classic has a metallic front that is less prone to scratching
# the interface has changed; some people like the new interface, some do not
# the new Classics have the Genius playlist and, I believe with the latest firmware, Genius Mixes
# there are some people who feel the sound from the 5th gen was better
# and, of course, there is the increased capacity
The only reason I upgraded to the 160GB Classic (the original from two years ago) was the need for increased capacity. Otherwise, I probably would still be using my 5th gen today.
