How to transfer files to Samsung Intensity phone?

I just got a Samsung Intensity through Verizon and I can't figure out how to transfer files from my Macbook. It comes with a USB cable but my computer doesn't recognize it. I heard you can transfer using Bluetooth but every time I tried it says "internal error: unable to transfer file." Any ideas on how I can add these files to my mobile phone?
