Using an eMac as a TV/DVD monitor?

I've got what is known today as an eMac, but when I bought it in about 2000 was a Grape iMac.

It's now not reading the HD so won't boot up. It's the second time this has happened so I think the fault's fairly permanent. I'm going to remove the HD for data protection (I've got the instructions) but rather than send it for recycling at the tip I was wondering if I could use the eMac as a monitor for a DVD player/TV monitor as I love the look fo the Grape iMac. Any ideas?

Not sure if this is the right forum, so please bump this if necessary.

G'day,

I gather this is what you have...

Whereas, this is an eMac...

The eMac came out in 2002 when the iMac (CRT; like the "grape") was discontinued, and replaced by the iMac (LCD, lampshade design).

So by the sounds of it you've probably got a 1999 Rev C iMac 266MHz...

As to your question... the iMac has no real "video in" options other than if the computer itself is functioning... Even then, you'll need to find a USB(1.0)-tv tuner - after fixing the hard drive issue...

The only other option would be if you know basically how to pull the computer apart, find the video card and know how to "hack" it to let you make your own inputs...

The G3 iMac forums are here:

but Hobo is right--making a monitor out of an iMac display is probably not worth the effort.

The other issue with such a conversion is that the power/analog/video board--or PAV board--is the part whose failure sends most G3 iMacs to the grave. It degrades due to heat and eventually takes down the entire computer.

Dead PAV boards are seldom repairable and new ones are no longer available.
