Ipod detected, but can't be indentified

I just bought a 5G Nano yesterday and have been recieving the error message, "An ipod has been detected, but cannot be identified." I have reinstalled itunes, restarted the ipod service, and change my ipod drive. Nothing has worked! I know some things about computers, but not a lot. Would installing SP3 take care of this problem? What should I do?!?!?

Hello griprm,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!

Yes, the issue is probably caused by the fact that you only have Service Pack 2 installed, and according to the 5th generation iPod minimum requirements, you need Service Pack 3 or later in order to have functionality of the iPod.

Here is the link to the iPod's minimum requirements if you would like to take a look. Hope this helps.

I have the same issue with my brand new Nano gen-5.
Windows sees the Nano but Itunes says _"An ipod has been detected but could not be identified properly"._

_I'm sure I've done everything that Apple and Microsoft suggested! I checked my settings, hardware profiles, Driver updates. Disabled Norton 360. I Checked Apples Hardware requirements "All Pass Spec"!

I went as far as reloading Itunes 9 and removing any 3rd party software.

This Nano (and cord)_IS recognized_ by my son's Imac and his windows laptop with Itunes!
I'm loosing faith fast! Any suggestions Please!

Then it's time to call Apple while you still have 90 days of free phone tech support - U.S. iPod and Mac technical support: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273) if you have tried everything in Apple's Knowledge Base - iPod appears in Windows but not in iTunes
