Canon MF 4680 Network Printer and Snow Leopard woes

I can't get the Canon MF 4680 to work across the network with Snow Leopard.

I have downloaded the Sept 4 drivers from Canon.
I have installed the drivers.
I have tried to install the printer using the "...more printers" option but, even thought the correct driver appears in the list and everything is ok, when I click the "add" button, the window won't close, like the add button doesn't work.
I have tried to install the printer using LPD. Print jobs submit fine and flash through the Print Manager window, but never actually print.

If you have any clues, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi there.

The UFR2 v2.00 driver does not support the More Printers > Canon IP (UFRII) for most of the Canon iR and MF devices. Instead, you need to select IP > LPD as you have done.

With regards to selecting LPD, you do need to enter a queue name of LP. A blank queue name can result in no jobs printing.

So I would delete the current queue that you have for the MF4680 and add again selecting:

Protocol > Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Address > IP address of printer
Queue > LP
Print Using > Canon MF4600 Series UFRII LT (UK)

Hi Pahu,

I did as you suggested. This time the Print Manager gives an error:

"The printer software was installed incorrectly. Please reinstall the printer’s software or contact the manufacturer for assistance."

I have reinstalled the driver before, no luck.

You mention (UK) in your driver description. I have the driver from the Aust site. Do I need a different one?

Thanks for your help,

Matt

Hi Matt,

The driver on the Canon Australia web site will show UK English so that is okay. It's just there is also a US English version, which I believe is default to Letter rather than A4 and it supports different models which are not sold outside of the US.

With the message you are getting, the reset that pengtao mentions may work for you. With the Print & Fax pane displayed, move your mouse over the printer list. Then hold down the Control key and click the mouse. This will display Reset printing system. Click this and restart your Mac. Once it has restarted, try adding the network printer queue again.

Hey guys, thanks so much for your help so far. However, it still isn't working.

I have:

reset printer system (multiple times) This DID get rid of the "not correctly installed" error

trashed printer prefs

restarted (multiple times)

checked to see the printer still works (it still prints from OS X 10.5.8 using the "more printers" setup)

made sure I've entered settings just as Pahu described

tried a whole bunch of other things

When I try printing, it goes through the Print Manager nicely, but never appears on the printer

Any more clues??

Thanks so much,

Matt

Hi Matt,

The thing we need to check now is that you have a connection to the printer from the 10.6 Mac. Could you open Network Utility and select the Ping tab. Then type in the IP address of the MF and set the number of pings to 4. Then press the Ping button and watch the results. If there is a connection you should get a response to each ping.

Hi Matt,

Okay, then there must be something else amiss. I would be inclined to trash the UFR2 folder, which is located in HD > Library > Printers > Canon, and then reinstall the v2.00 driver.

I also have the MF4680 and have tested 10.6 to it, both networked and USB. Note that the UFR2 v2.00 driver is not officially supported on 10.6 but I found it worked, albeit not as well as the same driver did to the larger copier-based imageRUNNER devices. Not that I have made the switch to 10.6, I am still testing it on my old MBP to ensure everything is okay before I change from 10.5.8...

I found the UFR2 v2.00 driver while looking for an imageRUNNER driver. Below is a link to another model of Canon iR that lists the same v2 driver.

http://www.canon.com.au/products/multifunctionals/multifunctionaldigital_devices/ir3245drivers.aspx

If you scroll down this page you will see the entry and link. While Canon is quoting 10.6 as supported, no where in the included readme does 10.6 get a mention. However as I said during my testing I found this driver did work on 10.6 for the models listed in the readme, at least the ones we have at work and what I have at home.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.

There is no pull scanning application for this series (there is an MF Scanning application for Mac for the MF4300 series) but you should be able to use the push scanning function of the MF4680 (Send).

The Send function will allow you to scan via SMB to a shared folder on your Mac. If you need instruction for how to configure the MF4680 and your Mac to permit this, then please start a new post as it is not related to this posting.
