Nikon D3000 - NEF.Raw

Hello,
I recently took a bunch of pictures on a Nikon D3000 in NEF.Raw formatting. I have upgraded to the newest version of iPhoto to download them to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.8) as it was not working on my previous version. That upgrade did not help. I still cannot get the pictures onto the MacBook.

Upon clicking import all I get an Unreadable Files pop-up.
Unreadable Files: 296
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data.)

Can someone please help?

Thank you

Powerbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 2.6 gig processor with 8600 video card

The RAW format on that camera is not currently supported, that's why you get the message.

Every camera model (note: Model, not Brand) produces a different RAW output and support has to be added for each model individually. Currently there is no support for the D3000.

Let Apple know you want it:

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback

Still waiting for support on the D300s...

In the meantime, I'd recommend holding on to your NEFs (until support is added).

You should be able to "process" the NEFs (i.e. convert them into JPGs) in the camera. You may have to do this one-by-one, but here are rough instructions. (Note that I don't have a D3000, so I'm guessing on the wording based on the commands in the D80 and D300s, but hopefully this helps.)
- Make sure the NEFs are still on the camera's memory card. If you deleted them when you moved the files to your computer, move 'em back to the card (in the DCIM) folder.
- Press the "Play" button to bring up a picture in on the camera's LCD. Press MENU and scroll down to the "Retouch" menu (with an icon that looks like a little paintbrush).
- Choose "NEF (raw) processing" and then set your file type (i.e. JPEG size and quality level), then hit OK.
- The camera will "think" for a few seconds, and then a JPG version of the file will be added to your memory card alongside the NEFs.
- Repeat over and over...

Good luck,

Mike

I'm having the same problems with my Canon EOS 5000D ("Canon T1i" - I think). I dont know anything about jpegs versus raw and have no idea what an NEF is. I haven't seen that yet. Do you know how to convert my RAW photos into another format so I can save them on iphoto? I dont want to loose my photos whileI'm waiting for Apple to support Canon's RAW data.

Hi

I also have the D3000, and have been waiting patiently for Apple to add RAW support (it is unfortunate that I was able to import these photos on my Windows 7 machine with no problems).

What I have been doing on my Mac is...

Import the pictures using the included Nikon Transfer software. Now I have a folder of NEF files. Nikon Transfer opens ViewNX automatically. I select all of the pictures and click Convert. I choose the highest quality JPEG settings and let it run. My iPhoto library is on an old Mac Mini with 1.5TB of storage, so this takes quite a while (1-2 hours for 250 photos). I'm sure it would run much faster on a more modern machine. Then I take the new JPEGs and import those into iPhoto. I keep the NEFs for when Apple adds support to Mac OS X for this camera.

Hope this helps!

I recently bought a D3000 and as stated here Aperture 2 doesn't support the NEF file format. What surprises me though is that Aperture is capable of importing the files. It also shows me thumbnails of the pictures and is capable of reading all the metadata contained within the NEF file. Just when I actually want to open an imported file it says that the image is in an unsupported format.

Is this just happening with me or is anybody else capable of importing, viewing thumbnails etc.?
