What is Qmaster for? I have it but don't know what it is.

I just installed Final Cut Studio. I noticed Qmaster. The interface looks a little like Compressor (the Batch monitor).

I see a menu for selecting Shake, Maya, Shell, and General Render. Is Shake the only Apple program that this is for?

I have used compressor with DVD Studio Pro 3, but I don't use Shake and don't plan to. Can I trash Qmaster?

Qmaster is the "traffic cop" for network rendering. It is installed as part of FC Studio as Compressor v2 can now do network rendering via Qmaster. You can learn more about it on the Qmaster Support Site, or in the Compressor manual (Select "Help" in Compressor to view in PDF format).

Don't know. If you're never going to do network rendering, I guess it depends on whether future updates to FC Studio require all originally installed Studio apps to remain in situ.

You cannot trash Qmaster without breaking Compressor. I believe they are one in the same, as Compressor uses qmasterd. If its not running, you get the "cannot connect to background process" thing. This has been the case since Compressor 1.x, so compressor must have used it from the beginning.

You can use Qmaster with any frame based renderer. Renderman, After effects, Maya, Shake, etc. Also, the Qmaster tools are needed to create clusters that Compressor can use. I actually used Compressor and Qmaster for awhile, and recently checked out distributed Compressor. It really speeds things up and works great.

Okay, everyone, please forgive my ignorance, but I am trying to educate myself and need a little bit of help here. Thank you, blink, for the description of what QMaster is . . . but I'm actually still a little bit confused . . .

What is "network rendering"? Although I imagine some of you at this point might be thinking "Sheesh, kid, if you don't even know what network rendering is, then we can't help you.", I don't want to mix up my terms by thinking "network rendering" is something that it might very well not be.

Thank you very much for your asistance,
Javier Calderon
