How to join a separated album

Have you ever had a situation where an album is split into two or more parts? It shows as two or more albums in list view. This can happen even with purchased music. I checked all tags (like album or artist title, disc/track numbers, sorting fields, etc.) and couldn't find anything wrong.

I thought I knew everything about tagging but this is really weird...

Slight variations in spacing, spelling, or punctuation of the album name can cause iTunes to consider the two songs to be from separate albums. Be sure that all the songs that are supposed to be from the same album have the exact same album name. One way to easily do this is to select all the songs and choose Get Info from the File menu and retype the album name such that it will apply to all the selected songs.

I had this problem with some audiobooks. One disc was separate from all the others. Turns out that disc didn't show as being part of a Compilation. Once I went into Info and Options then said Yes to Compilations, the 2 album covers merged together.

It's strange, but that actually fixed it. I marked all tracks as "part of a compilation" and - bang - album joined. Then I unmarked them (no compilation), and the album is still in one piece. Cool... But I still don't understand why it happened.
