No audio after Snow Leopard

Hi there. I've seen similar posts regarding this, but I didn't think they answered my specific problem. I recently upgraded to 10.6.1 and find that I no longer can hear other people when they are talking. They can hear me though. My sound output settings are correct in both Prefences (System, and iChat). I don't have MobileMe, which some have found was the cause of their problem. The problem happens no matter if I'm using the built in speakers, or using line-out speakers/headphones.

MacBook Pro (Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Hi,

In iChat menu > Preferences > Video section set the bandwidth to 500kbps

iChat 5 can see your whole Internet Connection. This may be a vast increase on the cap caused by System preferences > Quicktime > Streaming in iChat 4 or Earlier that at best limited you to using 1.5mbps.

Audio has always been the first to drop out of there are bandwidth issues.

Hi,

SO iChat sees

192042.162794 BWD: GotBandwidth: 339084/1335359 (up/down) @x.x.xxx.xxx:x.xxx.xxx.xxx
192042.162849 BWD bandwidth: 339 kbits up, 1335 kbits down.

About a Meg down and just over 300 up.

I take it that the 339 is based and a 384k service that you are paying for ?

They look fine.
You should be able to Host 4 way Video chat with that.
So it is not what iChat can see that is the problem.

Try a Safe Boot.
Shut down the Computer
Hold down the shift key when you hear the chime on Start up.
Release when you see the Apple.
After it boots in safe mode, restart it normally.

The Motorola device is a bluetooth headset. However this problem with the iMic was happening before I added it, which I did mainly to test if another non-USB audio device (besides the monitor) would work for sound.

I do notice on looking at it again that that it lists the "Speaker devices" several times, but only one of those times is it followed with the line about "Selected speaker". In the other cases it either reports the microphone twice or the microphone once.

Odd?

Hi,

In any of these logs it can be seen that a device does not seem to be specified straight away.

The Griffin page is not really that Explicit.
In the Link there is no "Will it work in Snow Leopard" question.

On the main page there is a iCon/Link at the bottom which suggests it does.

The Google Search I used to get there does not mention Snow Leopard (and that Summary does not appear as the text of the main page).

I take it the iMic disappears from both the Input and Output tab of System Preferences > Sound if you unplug it ?

Is it plugged into a USB 2 port ?
Is that port Powered ?

I've contacted Griffin tech support. They say they can't reproduce the problem on 10.6.2, meaning it works on SL (in theory and in practice at least on their end).

Yes, the iMic disappears from both Input & Output of Sound SysPrefs when unplugged. (And yes it works normally as a sound output device -- again just in iChat it doesn't work.)

It's plugged into the the back of the newest Apple Cinema display. (Which I take it is both USB 2.0 and powered.) I just tried plugging it into another powered hub and the same issue.

But I have a CLUE, ralph. if I listen hard I can kinda hear a little whisper of the audio from the apple test. meaning the sound is not off it is just really low.

I actually had the same problem with the SysPrefs sound out of several devices (display audio, this iMic, internal speakers) until I started toggling output devices (system and alerts) and volume levels. That fixed that but not iChat. Is there some base setting for volume that could get out of whack?

Hi,

Go to your Hard Drive/Library/Preferences/Audio Folder
This folder is new in Snow Leopard.
Delete the contents and restart the computer

(You may have two or four .plists in here)

You will have to go there manually as Spotlight will not report on any Library Folder.

Also if you have any devices that are MIDI check the MIDI Audio Set Up app in Applications/Utilities

Unfortunately this had no effect, Ralph. One time I got this to work after switching around USB ports and going to Audio MIDI settings and changing the volume sliders for this iMic output, which had mysteriously been set to zero. Other times those volume sliders are just fine in Audio MIDI settings (max) but still no sound in iChat. Very mysterious -- and annoying -- and yet another Snow Leopard serious problem IMO. I remain convinced that the whole USB system and audio devices system is fatally flawed in Snow Leopard

I gotta hand it to you Ralph, you're not only helpful but resourceful.

However that link is a goose chase and leads to an ad to download something called "Driver Robot". Other google searches for same thing (iMic firmware 1.1) lead to malware sites and other dead ends.

Griffin itself lists no drivers or firmware updates for the iMic:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/software

Their iMic FAQ says nothing about firmware, and has this to say about drivers:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/articles/24-what-software-drivers-do-i-install- for-the-imic-mac

System profile shows version 3.0 anyway, for whatever that's worth:

iMic USB audio system:

Product ID: 0x0223
Vendor ID: 0x077d
Version: 3.00
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Griffin Technology, Inc
Location ID: 0xfd310000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 100

(Note that this worked fine without any firmware updates from at least Jaguar. It's Snow Leopard that killed it.)

No audio after Snow Leopard
