VPN connection to server is SLOW

After I connect to my office via VPN, I execute a "Go/Connect To Server" in Finder. It can take up to 4 minutes to connect to the server via SMB. This cannot be normal...but it seems to take this long every time.

What can I do to speed this up?

MacBook Pro 17, Mac OS X (10.6)

I have this same problem too. I can VNC immediately and ping. But opening SMB of AFP has about a 4min lag. Odd, when I SMB to a linux machine, it opens immediately. I rooted the issue down to MobileMe. I noticed that after logging our of mobileME, the connections are not lagged. This is still an issue though...let me know what you find....logging out of MobileMe is a pain.
