2 I Pods on same computer???

I just bought my wife a Nano 5 & I already had a gen. 3, (I believe), & now have a huge library. My I pod won't let me put any more songs on it even if I delete several play lists its still says its full? I believe it's reading both I pods as one so it thinks there is more on it then there really is. If that's not the case is my library to big?
Sure appreciate any help! Thanks

Looking into the same thing - I have the 3rd gen ipod nano and thinking of getting my husband the 5th gen. Will they be compatible on the same computer? I had some problems with uploading music to my ipod and freezing my computer so I'm concerned with adding a 2nd ipod. I got advice not to upgrade to the next itunes (I have itunes 8 and need at least 9 for 5th gen). Any advice?

Hi, I'm no wiz with this stuff but I was fortunate to discover Cnet when I 1st joined the Computer generation so what I know is from there & learned to use forums. The I Pods are totally compatible with Widows & Vista & I've had Zero problems. I'm going to send you 2 links to Cnet's main Downloads pg. then their I tunes update pg. where you can read for your self editors & users reviews. At bottom there's a video where Cnet editors explain pgm. 1st. http://download.cnet.com/windows/ Then select from list on left " I-Pod options. Then http://download.cnet.com/Apple-iTunes/3000-2141_4-10235268.html?tag=mncol;pop
Please forgive me if this is old hat!
Getting back my experience, sounds like pgm. difference is 9 gives more options using I Tunes, check it out. My only issues with using two on same computer are that it makes a huge library which is common to both. Absolutely don't sync the Library & I pod do it manually.
Once I learned here that I pod songs can only be deleted from I Pods master song list I was happy to realize that they weren't being read as one by computer But this helped more, disconnect I Pod then go back to It Tunes Library Where you know can safely delete whole albums or just songs depending which list page your viewing. If you do it while it's still connected it will remove songs from I pod as well. As long as you don't use "Sync feature: It won't delete them! Sure Hope this is what your looking for! Forgive me if its redundant!
Best! Steve

I have 3 different nanos (2nd, 4th, & 5th gens)There is no need to delete songs to free up space on your ipod. Just check the box for "sync checked songs only" or whatever it says. Also, if you have itunes 9, itunes not only recognizes the different ipods as what device is plugged in at that moment, but whatever options you setup for that ipod are specific to that device. For instance, I have one nano (5th gen) that I use everyday that has some of every type of media I own on it and i use my older nano (2nd gen) to hold just audiobooks that i lend to my friend. This was annoying before itunes 9 as I would have to change settings for my 2nd gen syncing then change them back for my 4th gen.

Sorry I don't understand, actually I've never understood what the checked boxes accomplishes? Are you saying to set up all song storage by syncing rather then manual? I use both only for music& I don't want all the songs on both. Before I discovered for songs to actually deleted from the I-pod that had to be deleted from the I-Pod master song list only not the I-Pod Play lists. Once that I-Pod is then disconnected the sons & or albums can then be removed from the library with out loosing those songs from that I-Pod only if system is set to Manual control!
So what does sync checking all those songs boxes do? Does each I pod then have to have checked different boxes for the next group of play lists to be on the next I-Pod? If their all checked how does the system know the difference for each I-Pod?

I agree with Chris CA's previous post - use playlists to sync your different iPods, not the checkmarks.
That can get real tedious. The checkmarks also tell itunes whether to skip it during normal play on the PC (with iTunes) and whether to use it for genius playlists.
If you are removing songs from the PC & iTunes and only keeping them on an iPod, this is a good way to lose purchased music or have to re-rip CDs later.

You don't have to change which songs are checked in the master list if you download iTunes 9. With iTunes 9 it is almost like having a different library for every iPod. Plug in your iPod and open the iPod menu click on the music tab and check the "selected playlists, artists, and genres" button. When you do this the screen will show 3 boxes, one with the names of playlists, one with a list of all the artists in you library, and one with a list of what genres you music falls into. The only thing I can see you having an issue with is you both want different songs form the same artist, and then you would just make different playlists for any of those artist and check that playlist to sync it instead of checking the artist. Just remember, iTunes knows which iPod is being synced at the time and the setting are saved for that iPod only. Give it a try.
