Apps run when screen locked?

Just wondering in general and if this is the cause of some people's battery's to run down quickly and some who don't seem to have this problem.
I don't have a battery run down problem, although I'm not a very heavy phone user. I always make sure that I return my iPhone to the home screen (get out of any application) before I let it screen lock or do it myself. What happens with an application that is running when the screen locks - does it still run? Could this run down the battery for some?
I don't it doesn't run apps in the background and can't multi-task but do they run when locked.
Thanks,

The iPhone can multi-task.

Email accounts can be checked for new messages in the background, SMS/MMS can be received in the background, and you can listen to music with the iPod while email and/or SMS/MMS is being received in the background and a call can be received while using the iPod. During a call, you can access the internet at the same time with Safari, check/send email, and the same for SMS.

3rd party apps cannot run in the background.
