this happens on mine all the time, randomly starts fast forwarding through & the pause/play controls & volume controls become unresponsive. ive tried 4 different headsets & 2 different jacks for my car stereo.
I think I've emailed apple about it. its probably a fault with the headphone jack, Ive heard the build quality for them is poor. Dont fancy sending it off for repair. 😟

So ppl have been complaining since oct and there is no official answers yet ? If you want us to send our iphones for repairs, then say so. Although from what I can see lots of ppl have the same problem so its some kind of mess up in Apples side. Ppl are demanding answers for 2-3 month and nothing yet. Awsome customer support?!!!

Yes, this happens to me as well.
I've seen other posts on the forum about this also.
In my experience :
* It occurs with non-iPhone headphones (i.e. those without microphones)
* The issue can be fixed on OS's prior to 3.1.2

For OS's prior to 3.1, the fix was simple :
* Go into the Settings
* Go to iPod
* Set the volume limit slide to about 1/4 inch away from maximum
* lock the volume limit with a password.

This worked great for a long time on the 3.0 and 3.1 OS's. However, after updating to OS 3.1.2, the issue is back, and can not immediately be fixed.

Note that I have not called Apple on this yet, so unsure as to what the real issue is here.
(Apple, are you listening? Please help!)

Same thing happens to me (music starts fast-forwarding automatically and the ipod interface becomes somewhat unresponsive; the only "buttons" that work are the Next Track button ">|" and the Previous Track button "|<" ), and this only occurs when I use a 1/8 cable (Standard 3.5mm Stereo Cable) to connect the iPhone to any speaker system through an Aux 1/8 input (Car Stereo, LCD screen, Studio Mixer, etc.). It happens randomly and has occurred through all the firmware versions.

Note: It has never happened to me while I'm using the headphones, or while the iPhone it's docked on one of those iPod speakers (No cables needed, since the music is played through the device's dock). I have also tried using different 1/8 cables (6 different cables) hoping to solve it with no results.

This is the first thread on any forum that I have found, in which other users have the same (or at least quite similar problem), I hope Apple or someone else can help out (it's driving me nuts!!!).

I have the same problem as well: when connected to a car audio cable through the headphone jack (I've tried three - connecting via a cable to the car as well as two radio transmitter units), I'll get uncontrollable fast-forwarding, and occasionally stopping and starting of the music.

The Genius Bar recommended restoring my iPhone(3G) - which did work at least temporarily. But, it's back.

There is one other thread out there that recommends putting a thin piece of plastic around the plug before inserting it into the headphone jack (think grocery/shopping bag). Not sure how wise that is... but I just might give it a try.

Same problem as everyone on this thread. Very annoying. Happens more often after I work-out, which suggests some kind of interaction with the headphone/jack. Has Apple given any official insight on this?
