XsKey / SoundDiver / Logic / Mac - Roland JD990

hi there

i wondered if anyone can help. ive just purchased a hardware roland jd990. and to make patch editing a bit easier i was directed to download SOUNDDIVER.

I did this, however it would not install due to an error message stating Xskey not found.

I have been on the web looking for downloads, what are my options to get the soundiver to work???

i have also researched other external softewares to edit the jd990 but nothing is working

i would be most appreciated if anyone can shed some light on the matter

Apple decided yeras ago that you and the rest of the world doesn't need SoundDiver. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but that's how it is. Finding a second hand SD- licensed XS key will be diffilcult, finding one without a Logic license on it might turn out impossible.

Hi Ian,

I don't know if this will help, but I've been having a clear out and have found my old Sound Diver disk that came with my XP30. It contains Soundiver JV/XP, but runs in classic and I can't run it. If after some research you think this might be compatible then please contact me and we can go from there. It's no use to me now as I don't have the synth.

I seem to recall being told by an Apple engineer who worked on SoundDiver that the requirement of actually supporting every profile the software claims to support - including frequent updates as new music hardware is released - conflicted with Apple's historically understandable fear of being dependent upon third parties.

At least there's still Mark of the Unicorn's Unisyn.

I am still using my old iBook with Sounddiver to edit the patches in my Roland JV 1010. It makes the desk cluttered with the machine extra that doesn't really do much else than this job, and it annoys the **** out of me. Why did Apple buy and discontinue this product? It could have been lucrative as many synth companies shipped SoundDiver with their synths and they allready had a broad user base.

They bought the whole company, including SoundDiver. And Steve wants you to buy their hardware, not Roland's Korg's or Yamaha's. Business decision.

SoundDiver was pretty dead before Apple bought Emagic, it barely made it to Mac OS X and Emagic put no further effort into it.

I think it probably was not worth the investment anymore (fewer and fewer people are using external MIDI synth and the QA and engineering effort to support them is very high)

Heck, I'd be happy if Logic supported the patch name documents +that are supported in the OS+ like DP and digidesign do. Other people have already gone to all the trouble of creating patchname docs for just about everything, they'd just need to read them instead of requiring convoluted fiddling with the environment.
