Concrete poem

My daughter has to type her poem in the shape of a pumpkin. Right now she is just doing it line by line, making adjustments as she goes. Is there a way to make a text box in the shape she needs and then she types her poem into it?

Yes, possible, not real easy, but a good exercise.

I first pasted an image into my doc, used the Wrap Inspector to Unselected Object Causes Wrap and make Floating. Position the object and Arrange > Send Objects to Background.

Insert > Shape > Rectangle. Use the Wrap Inspector to set to Floating and unselect Object Causes Wrap.

Set the Fill to None or 0% Opacity.

Format > Shape > Make Editable.

Roughly position the Shape over the graphic.

Add control points to the rectangle by Option-Clicking the border.

Stretch the control points to match the graphic's shape.

When you're satisfied with the shape, double-click it to add text. The Text Insertion Cursor should appear inside the shape.

In the Graphics Inspector, Set the Border to None.

Jerry

Thanks for the feedback. I gave you a very general solution, probably not optimum. You could come close to the same thing just using a Circle Shape, eliminating Fill, without any reshaping -- much easier.

Just remember that any Shape, except the Lines, can contain text and can be modified by making it editable. Also, when adding Shapes and Graphic Objects to a document, pay attention to whether they are Inline vs. Floating and whether they cause text wrap -- attributes that can be adjusted in the Wrap Inspector.

Best regards,

Jerry
