hi, i've got the solution to eradicated the error 1008 with itunes 9. May be it'll work for the 1004 error ,cause it was the same window pops up, with the same message.
you juste have to rename your computer name in "share" from your preference systeme.
delate the current name, rename your computer, close the préférences systeme window,
reboot itunes 9, and that's it, you can now dowload from itunes. i did it, it works !
hope it wiil help you.,

FINALLY!! a solution for this annoying problem.

For the sake of clarity I will repeat the process mentioned previously by our European friend above.

Quit iTunes
Open System Preferences to the Sharing pane.
Highlight your Computer Name in the top section.
Change this name.
Restart your computer.
Start up iTunes.

I can't say that I understand why it solves the problem I was having updating my iPhone apps via the iTunes store on my MacBook Pro, but I'm sure glad it does. While I was able to make purchases and update apps on the phone via the App Store, trying to do either in iTunes failed miserably with the cryptic Error 1004 or 1008 messages. I did notice this type of repeated entry showing up in the system log.

Dec 23 23:10:09 duke iTunes[256]: doClip: empty path.
Dec 23 23:10:09 duke [0x0-0x1c01c].com.apple.iTunes[256]: Wed Dec 23 23:10:09 duke.local iTunes[256] <Error>: doClip: empty path.

Perhaps some plist somewhere became corrupted and renaming the computer flushed out the garbage.

Thanks for the solution <yez>. Hope everyone else has the same luck I did with it.
