quickcam for notebooks pro. mac compatible?

I just bought a macbook pro and still learning to use this machine as I switched from a windows based notebook. I understand that the macbook pro has a built in cam (isight) but it's very inconvenient that you cant change the position of the cam. really wanted to know if I can use my logitech quickcam for notebooks pro on it. Any info pls? thanks in advance.

I did a quick Google search and found that the Logitech camera may work with the Macbook Pro but has some shortcomings.

Maybe this would be a better solution for you.

I built one with a small mirror, some glue and a clothes pin and it works great. The nice thing about the built in iSight on my MacBook Pro 15" is how well it works in very low light. Impressive.

I don't know this for a fact, but it seems possible to me that your problem is a limitation of Photo Booth rather than of the camera or the OS. Photo Booth may just not have the flexibility programmed into it to work with cameras other than the built-in iSight. So if I were you, I'd try another application designed for webcam control.

Hello invulnerable_0916

Your quick cam for notebooks pro will work with your Mac OS X (10.6.1) equipped macbook pro if it is Logitech Part/Number 861303 (USB/PID 08CB).

One of the improvements added by Mac OS X 10.4.9 was support for USB Video Class (UVC) webcams. Therefore, any Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later can use any "UVC" webcam. However, not all USB connected webcams meet the UVC standard.

Per this Logitech page, QuickCam for Notebooks Pro comes in two different versions. Only the newer version identified above is UVC compliant and will work seamlessly with current Macs.

If your quick cam for notebooks pro is the older version of quick cam for notebooks pro, Logitech Part/Number 861209 (USB/PIDnbsp;08C3), it is not "UVC" compliant and does not work with Mac.

For more info on the UVC subject, see this thread:

Thanks EZ Jim. That must be the problem why my logitech cam isn't working on my mac. I have an older version of logitech quickcam for notebooks pro with part number 861209. 😟

You're welcome, invulnerable_0916.

If you need an external camera and have one of these, any Mac-compatible, Firewire equipped, mini-DV camcorder will work.

Alternatively, any USB webcam that conforms to the "UVC" standard will work with your Mac:

  • eCamm sells both wired USB and BlueTooth®-connected UVC models.

  • Apple (and many others) sells the UVC QuickCam Pro.

  • Lots of other options here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

Hi EZ Jim. Im just wondering why does my logitech cam appears in system profiler if mac doesn't support a non UVC compliant cam. Here's what I can see.

The fact that your Mac can see (detect) a device does NOT mean that Mac software can use (operate) it.
