Epson rx680

After I got notice from Apple's Software Update that there were Epson print drivers available for Snow Leopard I automatically updated. Even though my printer seemed to work fine with SL before the update it now goes to the Epson print controller and gives me an error and refuses to print. I've tried downloading the entire Epson package from their site and installing that, but again, failure to print. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm also posting to their tech support page. TIA

Update: I did a clean uninstall of the Epson software, rebooted and did a clean install from the downloaded Epson dmg. I tried printing from Pages, Safari, and Preview with the same results, an error in the Epson print monitor that says: /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents/MacOS /rastertoescpll failed

During the installation, each one of them, toward the end I would get a dialog that said:
System extension cannot be used
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugInInit.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

When I go to that directory /System/Library/Extensions/ it is empty. I still cannot print. Any suggestions are welcome. I had installed an hp G3010 a while back, but haven't been using it. HP's website, of course, is whacked and unhelpful, assuming that the hpPlugInInit.kext is their's and is hindering the Epson software install. Arrrggghhhh!

I recently updated to the latest Epson printer drivers, and that's when the problem started:
/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpII.app/Contents/MacOS/ rastertoescpII failed

Obviously a common problem; thanks, Epson.

I tried downloading the combo pack AKA flaming bag from Epson, uninstalling and reinstalling. NFG. So I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Et voila, my problem disappeared and I was able to print.

Then Software Update conned me into downloading and installing the latest Epson drivers, and the problem reappeared. So tomorrow, I'm reinstalling 10.6 again, then the 10.6 update, but I won't touch the Epson drivers again until someone else has been able to get them to clean up their act.

Man, this is way too much like using Windows.

Quick update - I noticed that some people were having success after deleting and re-adding the printer, while some were not. That seemed a lot easier than installing 10.6 a third time.

Well, in my case it seems to have cured the problem. I'm fully up-to-date on both Apple and Epson software now, and can print again. Thanks for the tip.

I have exactly the same model of printer but didn't see the problem you described. I wonder whether you are still on 10.6.0 instead of 10.6.1? You realize that updating from 10.6.0 to 10.6.1 is totally different from "updating" from 10.5 to 10.6, right? The latter is actually a major operating system switch, not really an "update".

I just had the exact problem. When I initially installed Snow Leopard, I had to go to the Epsom website and download the new drivers (which I thought Snow Leopard should have done automatically). That solved the problem until yesterday when new updates for the Epsom Drivers were installed. I again re-installed the drivers - no success. I unplugged the printer from its USB port and then plugged it back in, hoping it would be identified again. No luck.

After simply going to the Print and Fax section of System Preferences, I right clicked on the printer, clicked on "reset printer system", then I added the Epsom RX680. After that, everything worked fine.

I too have encountered this "challenge". I have spent all day trying to resolve without any success, I have deleted the printer, added the printer, re installed the software, still no progress. I am able to print a test sheet via the utility prog, also photo's via the epson photo software but nothing else. Any other suggestions out there? My printer is the SX600FW.

another 680 disaster here. very disappointing and will never buy Epson again. Is it me or does epson and its site seem like its from 1995?

I bought the printer from apple's site as I would have guessed that apple would only sell third party products if they were 100% compatible. sadly mistaken, for starters it doesn't work with airport express. Epson is a terrible product and has worse support, but I really ding apple for blindly selling products that aren't 100% compatible. I hope apple isn't getting to big for its own good and support/reliability starts to move towards MS quality.
