Hi Laurie

Welcome to Apple Discussions

You should be able to use your current network, depending on the equipment and setup.

First see the "Mac 101 File Sharing article" > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549

Then also check out > [creating a small mac network|http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&client=pub-6263300333013957&cof=FORI D%3A1%3BGL%3A1%3BLBGC%3A336699%3BLC%3A%230000ff%3BVLC%3A%23663399%3BGFNT%3A%2300 00ff%3BGIMP%3A%230000ff%3BDIV%3A%23336699%3B&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&q=Creat ing a+small+macnetwork&btnG=Search]

On the Mac to be shared, go to System Preferences Sharing pane. Check the box next to +File Sharing+ to turn it ON.

On the other Mac, if it has Leopard or Snow Leopard, open any Finder window. Look under SHARED in the sidebar. The Mac being shared should appear there. Select it. Over to the right, click the button that says +Connect As+. Enter the user name and password for the user on the shared Mac and connect.

You can do this in either direction. If the "laptop" is Windows, you can do file sharing with it too, but it takes more steps to set it up.
