I thought 3.1.2 was suppose to correct this issue. When I enter a no service area my 2 phones start searching and never re-establish service when I re-enter a service area. This is simply a pain in the ***.

make sure you have autoupdates turned on in itunes and let it push you the updated carrier profile

Thanks, but no new carrier has been offered. Rogers is my provider and we have been at carrier version 5.0 since 3.1. I think it is time for a call to Rogers and see if they can help with this issue.

I am experiencing the same problem. The phone randomly starts to Search for service. I have to restart the phone to get service back. The phone use to coma when I upgraded to 3.1.
I stopped using 3G to fix the problem. Now since the 3.1.2 update, the old coma problem is gone but is replaced by a new kind of coma at random times, usually when I absolutely need the phone to be working. If it wasn't the "phone" part of the phone, I wouldn't care that much, but this is really making me "think different" about Apple. I'm going back to 3.0 until I either upgrade my phone or they release a new update. That was when I loved my iPhone. I can't take it anymore.

I am having this problem, too. It happens daily as I travel.
While I love the device, this makes the phone all but useless for me.

This is second update from Apple that has created problems. The 3.1 update required me to stop using 3G or it would not work.

I feel Apple is becoming a really unreliable brand. Their products seem great at first but then the software has been a mess. And while their customer services is polite, they have not able to fix problems.

    Very disappointing.

I don't think its Apple that is the unreliable brand. This sounds like a carrier problem, so it's most likely an AT&T issue.

You may be correct that the carrier has issues, but if AT7T is the only carrier that Apple will allow us to use in the States, then Apple is the one designing and promising me an Apple experience -- and over the last several months, it has been really horrible.

I have called AT&T, too, and they provided a nice rep who spent lots of time with the last issue, but in the end, they were clueless and no help. Frankly, part of the issue is that Apple will often not acknowledge an issue or provide a notice of when it will be fixed. One is just left in wasting time (like me on this forum now) trying to find a fix.

Overall, what was a great device is turning into a really lousy experience

Wrong... I have had the same issues with 4 iPhones on Rogers. It happens with AT&T, Rogers and Telus. It's the OS! It all started with OS 3.1 and now 3.1.2.

    Apple is losing it.

I agree, I have 3 iPhone 3G's and they are all having this issue. I reported this to Rogers on the 19th of Nov. and I told them I will give it a week or so for them to get it rectified or I will be looking to get out of my contract. This is unacceptable, I don't care if it is a Apple or a Rogers issue, someone needs to step up and fix it.

I have two iPhone 3G's and have had this problem long before the version 3 update. Thought it was just the bad coverage in the small town I live in, AT&T had no answers though, even when I could see there tower, Apple sent me a new phone but I still have the same problem and so does my wife and a reboot of the phone is the only way to fix it. I can go for several days with no problem the it just happens. Has there been a problem like this with the newer 3GS?

I also have seen this on my 2 3G phones. However, I am not sure it is only on 3.1.x. I saw it occasionally pre-3.1.

Although I have yet to see this on 3.1.2, I actually remember this happening all the way back on my first iPhone, in 2007, with 1.x firmware.

So it may be a long-standing intermittent issue.

I have experienced this as well with the original Iphone on 3.0.

Does turning the Airplane mode on and off fix this issue at all?

This bug has been around for a while now, and I was among the unlucky few who has been affected by it since 3.0 came out. I live in DC, and any time I use the Metro, hop into an elevator, or go into the basement level of my apartment building (basically any area that doesn't have reliable service), the phone won't re-establish its connection; instead, it will just show "Searching..." at the top for about a minute, then "No Service" eternally after that.

Until 3.1.2 came out, the only way to fix it was to actually reset the phone, which of course was incredibly annoying, as it takes a solid 2-3 minutes to reset. I too was psyched when I saw that "Resolved a connectivity issue where iPhones did not re-establish network connection" appeared in the 3.1.2 release notes, but it was either a faulty fix, or Apple was referring to a different issue. Either way, it didn't fix the bug we're having. However, since I installed that firmware, simply putting the phone into airplane mode for 5-7 seconds, then taking it out again seemed to refresh the search and about half the time, it finds a signal again.

So to answer the last question: yes, that works (for me). Sometimes. I can't find a rhyme or reason for the times it works versus the times it doesn't, either. But sometimes simply repeating the process over and over does the trick. Still, this seems like it would be a rather easy fix on Apple's end, since it quite evidently isn't a network issue.
