Computer will not recognize ipod nano 5th gen

My POS Dell computer will not recognize my new 5th Gen ipod Nano. I get an error message that says, "An ipod has been detected, but cannot be identified." I have been on the phone with apple support and tried everything they told me to correct the USB problem. Nothing has worked! I am almost positive that my computer is the problem.

I have done everything I know to fix the USB device. Windows says the device is working properly, yet it will not recognize my ipod.

Are there any SPECIFIC suggestions that I have not tried already? Again, I have tried everything said by apple and windows support. I would call a Dell technician but I cannot afford $50!!!

Will reinstalling WIndows XP take care of this problem?

Thank you!!!!

Dell, Windows XP, 32 Bit
