No Printer Job List and No AutoQuit

I have a Canon i70 printer. When I print a document the Canon i70 application automatically opens on my computer. However, when the job finishes, the application does not automatically quit as it used to in previous versions of OS X. The other problem is that be default the job list does not show up in the printer application. So, it's sort of the worst of both worlds. The printer application is open, but doesn't have any information there. To get the job list I have to open System Preferences and double-click on the printer, and then the job list opens in the Canon i70 application. Does anyone know how to change either of these settings (i.e. to get the job list to show by default and to get the printer application to quit automatically after a successful print)? They're both pretty irritating.

Thanks.

This does not appear to be a Canon issue at all, but a Mac OS X issue. The behavior is the same with all my printers, including the Fax that is built into the OS. I have another computer running 10.4 and it exhibits the same behavior. This seems to be a pretty significant bug; does anyone know if Apple has a solution to it?

I don't believe there is a bug. This is how Leopard operates (and probably 10.4 but I cannot remember that far back).

With regards to the printer queue on the Dock, when it appears, if you control-click on the icon there will be an Auto Quit option. Tick this and the print queue will close once the print job has been sent from the Mac. (You will have to close the queue manually after you select Auto Quit but from then on it will work).

As for the Printer List, once a job has been sent it will no longer appear in the printer queue. If you want to see your completed jobs, with the Print Queue open, click on Job and then Show Completed Jobs.

Ah, this is very useful. I was not aware of that auto-quit option in the dock. Hopefully it is there in 10.4 as well.

My complaint about the job list was not that completed jobs do not show up, the problem I am experiencing (on all printers both 10.4 and 10.5) is that the job list itself does not show up when jobs are sent to the printer. In other words, the application opens, but no windows appear. The only way to show the job list is to go via the System Preferences and then double-click on the printer. Have you found a way around that as well?

When you print from an application, after the print dialog appears and you select Print, you should find that the Printer queue appears in the Dock until the job is sent. With the Auto Quit set, the Printer queue will then close.

If you are watching the Printer queue and believe the job is not appearing in the list, this can appear to occur if the file size is not that large and the job processes very quickly. If you want to check if the job is appearing in the queue, open the printer queue but turn the printer off. Then try a print, you should see the job appear in the queue but not leave due to the printer being turned off.

Let me clarify the latter part of the problem. The problem IS NOT that jobs are not showing up in the queue. The problem is that the QUEUE WINDOW itself does not show up. In other words, the printer queue APPLICATION DOES SHOW UP IN THE DOCK. But when I go to that application, there are no windows. I cannot see the printer queue. The application is useless without the queue window. This is the same problem on all printers. The only way to get the queue window to show up is in the queue application, go to Printer: Show Printer List, which opens System Preferences. Then double-click on the active printer. Then the queue shows up in the printer queue application. I am trying to figure out how to get the application to show the queue window by default on opening, as this is a very annoying and roundabout way to get to the window. Additionally, as I have noted, the application is useless without the queue window!

Sorry for the previous replies. Now that you have clarified your issue I can understand what you are experiencing. For the record, I have never had this symptom on any Mac and hence my confusion with what you were seeing.

Whenever I print, the printer queue for that printer appears in the Dock, and if I click on it before it quits I see a pane that provides the ability to Delete, Hold and Pause a print job for that print queue.

If you are not getting the same then I suggest you try resetting the printing system, which will require you to add the print queues again.

To reset the printing system, open Print & Fax and move your mouse over the Printers list. Then hold down the Control button and click your mouse. When reset printing system appears, let go of the Control button and click the reset text. This will remove all printer queues but not the associated driver files. So, if you unplug the i70 USB and reconnect, the printer should automatically appear back in the Printers list.
